HARTSBURG – Patrick H. “Pat” Mooney, 70, of Hartsburg, Ill., passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at his home.

He was born on August 13, 1953, in Peoria, to Howard and Maryann (Grawey) Mooney. Pat married Janine Hutchinson McCartney on December 5, 2003, in Pekin, Ill.

Surviving are his wife, Janine Mooney of Hartsburg, Ill., children, Patrick J. Mooney of St. Louis, Mo., Elizabeth (Luke) Sabers of Lenexa, Kan., Ben (Sarah) Mooney of Pekin and Andrew Mooney of Peoria; step-children, Joshua (Stephanie) McCartney of Morton, Vanda (Justin) Liesman of Edinburgh, Ind., Valerie Reynolds of Mt. Pulaski, Ill. and Phillip McCartney of Delevan, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; and siblings, Mike (Victoria) Mooney of Plainfield, Ill. and Christine Jackman of Joseph, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, David Jackman.

Growing up in West Peoria, Pat loved wandering the hills, creeks and woods in the area. He also loved fishing at strip mines in Peoria. Pat loved sports, especially baseball and basketball.

He attended Spalding Institute High School, where he played basketball for two years and baseball for four years.

Pat graduated from Bradley University in 1975, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration.

Pat coached various basketball and baseball teams in Peoria area leagues from the late 1960’s through the 1970’s.

During that time, he coached Joe Girardi in Little League. Girardi played with Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies and New York Yankees and then was a manager of several teams and won a World Series as the Yankees manager. He also coached against Jim Thome in Little League. Thome played for the Cleveland Indians was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Pat also refereed IHSA basketball from 1979-1980.

Pat was a loan officer in Peoria and East Peoria for 20 years from 1975 to 1995. He then worked at Morton Buildings, Inc. as a Manager of Risk Assessment and Compliance from 1995 to 2023.

He was very compassionate and took care of his father and mother while she had Alzheimer’s for several years before they both went into a nursing home.  

Pat had a very dry sense of humor and made everyone laugh.  He enjoyed baking, and was especially talented at baking cookies. 

He was a loyal fan of the St. Louis Cardinals for all his life.

Most importantly, Pat was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Memorials may be made to Illinois Cancer Care.
