Patrick "Pat" Surma 77, of McHenry IL, passed away on April 2, 2025. He was born on May 23, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois to parents Arthur and Lerlene (Rye) Surma.
Pat was an extremely proud military man, having served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Patrick carried his service with a sense of pride that permeated his very being, and he found camaraderie among fellow service members. Recently, he embarked on a notable adventure with other veterans on the Honor Flight. This journey filled his heart with nostalgia and gratitude-an experience he cherished dearly.
As an iron worker by trade, Pat was no stranger to hard work but he was so much more than just his occupation. He was the funny guy who could crack a joke and lift spirits, all while being unfailingly helpful and kind. If you needed a hand, whether lifting something heavy or just lifting your mood with a classic one-liner, Patrick was your go-to guy.
Pat was also a dedicated life member of VFW Post 4600, where he connected with fellow veterans, swapping stories and sharing laughter while celebrating their shared bonds. It was here that his sense of community flourished, highlighting the kindness that radiated from him.
Pat is survived by his wife Laura Mae (Tonkin) Surma, his 7 children, Alan Surma of Cambodia, Jim Surma of McHenry, Jessica Surma of Lake in the Hills, Frank Surma of Lake in the Hills, Katherine Surma of Austin, TX, Tim Surma of Wonder Lake, John Surma of Tennessee, and 7 grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by both of his parents Art and Lerlene Surma, brother Micheal Surma, brothers -in-law Brett Tokin, Bill Schultz, Steve Jenkins, sisters-in-law Sherrie Tonkin and Linda Tonkin.
