Paul David Barcelo, 78, of Bellingham, formerly of Franklin, died October 29 at his home following a long illness. He was the husband of Mary L. (Walsh) Barcelo for the past 46 years.
Born in Boston, November 14,1946, the son of the late Robert and Gertrude (Bering) Barcelo, Paul was raised in Lynnfield and had lived in Franklin for many years before recently moving to Bellingham.
Paul received a B.A. Degree in English from Northeastern University.
Paul enjoyed writing and publishing his novel, The Sweet War Man, reading, and spending time with his family and beloved dog, Brady.
Paul served in the Army during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of 1st. Lieutenant. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Army Aviation Badge. Paul also continued to serve in the Army Reserve for 21 more years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Gregory P. Barcelo, and his wife Alicia of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Catherine M. Rosenthal of Douglas, Robert F. Barcelo, and his wife Kathleen of Norfolk, and Brianna E. Barcelo of Franklin.
He was the brother of the late Linda Stipek – Lafond.
Paul is also survived by his grandchildren, Rory and Maddox Barcelo, Jack and Oliver Rosenthal, and Abigail and Lillian Barcelo.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 6 in the Ginley Funeral Home of Franklin (ginleyfuneralhomes.com) 131 Main Street, Franklin, from 4-7 p.m.
Burial will take place on Friday November 14 at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 1:15 p.m.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the HunterSeven Foundation.
