Virginia - Beach - Paul Joseph Barrows, 84, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, in
Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Born April 12, 1941, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Paul was the eldest of four children born to Dorothy and Peter Barrows. Paul was a 1959 graduate of Scranton Technical High School, where he played basketball. After high school, Paul proudly served in the U.S. Army for two years and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan.
During his earlier years in PA, he worked at Gould Battery and could often be found with a fishing rod in hand. Known affectionately as "Froggy," he was a passionate football fan who would cheer (loudly) for the New York Giants. Tuesday nights were reserved for watching boxing matches with his son, Jeff, often with a slice from Greenridge Pizza. His taste in music was wide-ranging, from classical compositions to ZZ Top and Talking Heads, to country in his later years. His adopted family in Virginia was humored to learn S.O.B. by Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats was one of his new favorite songs, a song he later danced to at his grandson's wedding in 2019.
Paul retired in May of 2001, and in 2002 moved to
Virginia Beach, VA with the love of his life, Patty, to be near her daughter, Susan, and her family. They were later married in their home in West Neck Village on November 19, 2003. In Virginia, Paul was more than a loving husband to Patty, but a loving bonus father, grandfather, and later great-grandfather. Paul and Patty spent many hours at the beach, traveled cross-country to Colorado to visit Patty's cousin, and cruised to Bermuda and took a trip or two to Disney World with their dear friends. They also took many trips to New Jersey and the OBX of NC to visit his Stepson and family. Paul also enjoyed playing golf, walking the boardwalk, watching his grandkids, grand pups, and great grand pups, and celebrating holidays with family and friends.
Through the years, you would see him and Patty walking through the neighborhood they loved and after Patty passed in 2023, he continued those walks through their neighborhood and when he moved to his smaller apartment. Walking is where he found some peace until illness made walking no longer possible. After Patty and through his final days, Susan and her husband, Kenny, selflessly provided the love, care and support he needed and that he had always shown to them and their family.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Peter Barrows, and by his wife of 20 years, Patricia Barrows. He is survived by his siblings, Jean Frable (husband Jim), Dorothy Grimes (husband Charles), and Peter "PJ" Barrows (fiancé Diane), his children, Jennifer Avery, Jeffrey Barrows, Susan Shoop (husband Kenny), Tim Nuss (wife Dorreen), three grandchildren, Cory Shoop (wife Katie), Ashley Shoop, and Shauna Nuss, and his great grandson, Caden Shoop.
A private memorial will be scheduled at a later date for the spreading of Paul and Patty's ashes together to honor their wishes.
