Paul Canaday (73), a longtime resident of Anchorage, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2023. He chose to be at home when he passed, surrounded by his girls. Paul held many important roles in his life, but the one he held most dear was that of Father. He would do anything for his girls, always there for them with a loving and forgiving spirit. Paul was known for being willing to help anyone; he had a gracious and generous heart. His daughters recall his fun teasing and laughter that always made them feel so special. Paul had a passion for cooking; he was never happier then when he could cook a unique meal for his family and friends.
Paul was born in West Virginia and traveled much of his life having been in 48 states before choosing to settle in Alaska, the 49th state he visited. He married his wife, Kristin Butler, in 1969. They were married for 46 years until she passed away in 2016 after a prolonged illness. Paul retired from Carrs Grocery after more than 25 years. He also worked for Proctors, Oaken Keg, George's Market, and on the Pipeline. His work ethic was second to none. He took pride in going above what was expected and making those around him feel good along the way.
Paul is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Melissa McCarty (Todd) and Jennifer Staats (Alan); his grandchildren, Emma and Ethan McCarty, and Cody, Riley, Kayley, and Toby Staats, as well as his wonderful companion of four years, Kathy Northcutt. Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Kristin Canaday, his father, George Canaday, and his mother, Ruby Reeves. The family held a private celebration of life at Hacienda, his favorite restaurant.
"Accept what life offers you and try to drink from every cup. All wines should be tasted; some should only be sipped, but with others, drink the whole bottle." – Paulo Coelho
