A very long, fruitful, and happy life of 94 years ended peacefully on Christmas Eve morning, 2023 in Asheville, NC. Paul and his deceased wife of 75 years, Joyce Varme Erickson, moved to Asheville in 2018 after being lifelong residents of Des Moines, Iowa to live their final years closer to family.
Paul graduated from East High in 1947, where he was a star football and baseball player, followed by attending Grand View College. In 2012 he was inducted into the East High School Hall of Fame for his long-term support and service to the local community. Paul was extremely active for years as a coach and mentor for youth baseball players of all ages, beginning with coaching an Eastside park district team to championship, then to city little league teams where he helped to build two ball fields to give players a home to play, took a Babe Ruth team for teens on to win the Iowa State Championship in 1963, coached championship teams in the high school summer Connie Mack league, and founded the Stan Musial league in 1969 to give college students a place to play when they returned home for the summer. He also served on the City Zoning Commission, appointed by the mayor as the Eastside representative, where he was selected as the chairman four times and received two city commendations.
Paul retired from Prudential Insurance Company where he worked in sales and as a district manager.
Paul was one of 7 children of John and Anna (Rodine) Erickson, immigrants from Sweden and he was very proud of his Swedish heritage.
Paul is survived by his four children, Paul Erickson Jr. of St. Petersburg, Florida, Nancy Luxen of Dallas, Texas and her husband Robert Luxen, LuAnn Adams of Leicester, North Carolina, and her husband Henry, Janice Drinkwine of St. Petersburg, Florida, sister Betty Manley of Des Moines, Iowa as well as six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

I have so many fond memories of Joyce and Paul and their family. Growing up on York St is Des Moines was a wonderful experience. The neighborhood was filled with kids. My deepest sympathy to Paul, Nancy, LuAnn and Janice. The last time I saw your parents was when they stopped into Iowa State Bank and came up to my office to visit. It was wonderful to see them again. Sending love to your family.
