Paul Duane Hartzler

Duane Hartzler 78, of West Liberty passed away Sunday July 27, 2025, in his home with his family by his side. He was born September 7, 1946, to Paul and Wauneta (Smith) Hartzler. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann (Morris) Hartzler; and his only daughter, Jenny & (Casey) Patton; grandchildren Wyatt Paul Patton and Harper Ann Patton. Duane graduated from West Liberty-Salem in 1964 and later in 1969 The Ohio State University with a bachelor's degree in biology. Soon after college he started his career in science. Most of his career focused on the idea to start MASI (Mobile Analytical Services Inc), an environmental lab that services the state of Ohio. He retired from MASI after over 40 years. Duane eloped with the love of his life Mary Ann on Friday, June 13th, 1970, and was married 55 years. He was known for his selfless (care giving) to his wife, Mary Ann and never wavered from being by her side. He was a devoted father who adored his only child and cherished all the time spent with his two grandchildren. His best memories were taking his family to Disney and camping together over the years. He enjoyed tinkering with his cars and mowers throughout his life, and in his later years he was lucky to have gained a son-in-law, Casey, who he loved and appreciated. Duane also enjoyed his time at the Liberty Gathering Place, with his lifelong friends, beloved neighbors and time spent taking care of their property together. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 9, 2025, from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM at the Green Hills Retirement Community Foundation Hall.
