North Augusta, SC – Mr. Paul J. Hyer, Jr., 82, entered into rest September 29, 2025. Memorial Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, October 11th, at 3 o'clock in the Posey Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. A private interment will be held later. Mr. Hyer was born August 23, 1943, to the late Paul Hyer, Sr. and Maxine Hyer Roach. He was raised in North Augusta. He played youth baseball at all levels through high school varsity, and he remembered his coaches with affection and respect. He attended the newly opened USC Aiken, where he was the first president of the class. (Two Aiken boys split the remainder of the vote.) He later graduated from the University of South Carolina in Columbia with a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy. That's where he met his sweetheart, Carol. They raised four daughters who were brought up to revere the Gamecocks and to despise the Team of Orange and Regalia. Many fall Saturdays were spent in the shadow of Williams Brice Stadium. In 1975 he opened Hyer Drug Store on Martintown Road and operated the pharmacy until 1998 when he and Carol departed for Charleston, SC. After completing her degree, she took a job as a special education teacher while he worked at an outpatient pharmacy at MUSC. They later moved to Summerville, SC where they both retired. Carol's passing in 2015 brought him back to North Augusta in the summer of 2016. He was a mentor to the many young people who drove the delivery truck at Hyer Drug Store over the years. He served the North Augusta community through his business and by founding a Drug Abuse Hotline. He ventured into local politics, albeit quixotically, as the leader of Concerned People of Area 2 (CPA2) which advocated for the deconsolidation of the Aiken County school district. His business sponsored many baseball teams like those that had meant so much to him growing up. He is fondly remembered as the unbending (mostly) patriarch of his family and as a provider to his wife and daughters, whom he adored. He possessed, in large measure, a drive to succeed which served him well as a young man. He was resourceful, resilient, and persistent. He cheerfully worked his way through very non-ideal circumstances before, during, and after college. He was industrious and admired industriousness in others. He took on a lot, and he was motivated by opposition. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hyer was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Hyer; and a daughter, Ashley Stura. Surviving family members left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Kristen Godbold (Gene), Dana Hyer Hett (Scott), and Katey Hyer; a sister, Joyce Hyer: a brother, Scott Hyer (Susan); twelve grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Dear Nieces,

Aunt Donna and I send our most sincere condolences to you and your families. We know what it feels like to lose your last living parent. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. Please know that we are there with you in spirit even though we can't be there in person due this severe cold that we have had for the past two weeks. We did not want to take the chance of infecting you and your families. We are both on the mend but not over it yet. Please let us know if there is anything that we can do to assist you in this time of grief. We take solace in knowing that Paul is back in the loving arms of Carol and Ashley.
Love,
Uncle Charlie and Aunt Donna

Jaimie and I knew Paul for our favorite pharmacy while we lived in North Augusta and continued to visit from Augusta until he closed. He was such a kind person and we both were sad when we lost touch with him when he moved. We send condolences and love to his family.
