Paul Lachiewicz Obituary

Paul Francis Lachiewicz

July 16, 1951 - May 5, 2024

Chapel Hill, North Carolina - Paul F. Lachiewicz, MD, aged 72 passed away after a full and productive life on 5 May 2024. He was born in New York City to the late Frank and Helen Lachiewicz. He attended St Thomas the Apostle Elementary and Archbishop Molloy High in Queens, NY. He earned a BS at Manhattan College and his MD at Cornell Medical College. There he met the love of his life, Ave Maria, at an old fashioned "mixer" in the school gym. He was introduced to orthopaedic surgeons at the Hospital for Special Surgery, including mentors Drs. Eduardo Salvati and Chit Ranawat. Ave and Paul married in 1977 in NYC. After two years of residency training in general surgery at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, where Ave received her MD, they returned to NYC, with baby Jayne in tow. He completed his orthopaedic residency and a year of arthritis surgery fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery. The family, now including Anne, settled in Chapel Hill. He spent 26 years in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of North Carolina, passionate about patient care, education, and clinical research in total hip and knee replacement surgery, rising to Full Professor. He and Ave had three additional children, Mark, John, and Mary Claire. In 2009, he joined a private practice and later the Durham VA Medical Center and a Consulting Professor at Duke University's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. His academic career included over 200 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, numerous national and international presentations, and invited memberships in the Hip Society, Knee Society, and International Hip Society. He enjoyed lecturing with his travels to New Zealand, Mumbai, and numerous trips to London. He was honored to explore his Polish ancestry in 2019, as an invited professor at the 10th Knee meeting in Krakow.

He was involved in his children's education and sports: including serving as a parent rep for their summer league swim team. He took the children on trips to the mountains for skiing and hiking and to Yellowstone/Grand Teton in Wyoming. He introduced Ave and the children to his love of scuba diving in Cozumel and the NC coast. Mary Claire spurred his interest in triathlon at the age of 58; he completed numerous races over 14 years. He enjoyed the outdoors in Colorado, climbed more than ten 14ers, summitted Mt. Kilimanjaro, and completed a R2R2R on his first visit to the Grand Canyon. He and Ave celebrated their faith with travel to Israel, Fatima, Lourdes, Barcelona, and Italy. He took his mother Helen in her 80s for a tour of Rome, culminating with an audience with Pope Saint John Paul II. He and Ave loved visiting their children and 11 grandchildren, especially at NC beach gatherings.

He was a St Thomas More Catholic Church member for over 40 years, serving as an Eucharistic minister as well as member and chair of the Pastoral Council (signing the mortgage for the new church), and taught Confirmation class, with Ave, for seven years. Later, he encouraged his grandchildren to attend Sunday school and to receive the sacraments.

Paul is survived by his wife of 46 years, Ave; and their children, Jayne (Naz), grandchildren Ava, Bond, and Ella; Anne (Otis), grandchildren Lucas and Lily; Mark (Heather), grandchildren Jack, James, and Jacob; John (Charissa), grandchildren Hazel, Teddy, and Felix; and daughter Mary Claire. He was the second of four children, survived by Thomasine Roberts, Joanne Baschinsky, and Dr. Peter Lachiewicz.

Paul wants us to know that he loved his family dearly, and he asks that they take care of each other.

In lieu of flowers, his family asks for donations to the Paul Lachiewicz Award at UNC School of Medicine https://give.unc.edu/gift/orth, the Drs. Paul and Ave Maria Lachiewicz Scholarship Fund at Weill Cornell Medicine at https://give.weill.cornell.edu/, or STM Catholic Church's general fund https://secure.myvanco.com/YGJD/home.

The Lachiewicz family is under the care of the Hall-Wynne Funeral Service where a viewing will be held on 16 May from 6-8 pm. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at STM Catholic Church on 17 May at 2:30 pm.

I was a classmate of Paul´s at Cornell Medical School though I only heard about his untimely passing today 8/17 from another classmate .
He clearly had a full and truly wonderful life and family .

To the Lachiewicz Family, I am so sorry to hear of his passing. Dr. Lachiewicz was my favorite surgeon at UNC, I was the Orthopedic Specialty Tech who scrubbed with him on numerous total joint cases. My fond memory is when he came to my baby shower. He will surely be missed. I pray you have strength and peace.

Considering all of Paul´s accomplishments and virtues, it is hard not to think of him as "a man for all seasons." So it is curiously appropriate that both his marriage and funeral occurred in churches dedicated to St, Thomas More, the hero of the play and the Oscar winning film by that name. Like Paul, More was tremendously successful in his profession and internationally recognized for his intellectual accomplishments. He also was a devout Catholic layman seeking the welfare of all of humanity. And he too was a friend to many, a loving husband and a dedicated father, involving himself to an unusual degree in the education and spiritual development of his offspring.

It was my pleasure to work with Paul as a nurse in the Ortho clinic. His energy could be hard to keep up with. He spoke often of his kids when we had a quiet moment. I now have the absolute fortune and pleasure to work with his son Mark as a nurse in his clinic. It is clear that they share lots of similarities. The greatest 2 being a great sense of humor and a deep passion for the work.
My prayers are with you all.
Best

Such warm and fond memories of Paul (and Ave) during my years in Chapel Hill. His faith and compassion were an inspiration. I live in KY now, otherwise, I would say these words in person.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. Paul was my doctor when I had a traumatic car accident with the worst break he ever saw and he put me all back together again. A wonderful doctor and a nice man..

Dear Ave and family, you are constantly in our thoughts and prayers and we send all our love at this time.
Paul is an amazing person, always so full of fun, so positive, so supportive, and his ability to just laugh so openly and honestly made him a treasure to be with. Paul remains an inspiration to me and my life is better from knowing Paul.
Our deepest sympathy to you Ave and your family.

Dr. L and I worked together in Orthopedic surgery at the Durham VA Medical center. I was a runner and I recall he never liked running long distances. One day, he said, "You should switch to Triathlon because you're going to wear your knees out." We always laughed about that because I said, "I don't care, you can just replace them." We became triathlon buddies except I could barely swim and had a bike I had borrowed. He was at my first Sprint distance with all the love and pride of an old friend when I crossed the finish line. My first half Ironman was one that he had recommended.
He was one of the first people I called when I crashed my bike three weeks ago and needed orthopedic surgery. One thing that I love about Dr. Lachiewicz is he taught me to, "Go for it!" Even when I wasn't quite sure I could do the distance or make the cut off times. I watched all his adventures in awe and planned on doing many of them once I retire. He was an amazing athlete and mentor and I can't imagine racing again without his valuable input. I'll miss you buddy.
Sheila.

Dr. L was one of my favorites....he saved my life. After a total knee replacement in July of 2008, I knew he would do my second one the following May, of 09. as I was bone on bone with both knees. In October of 2010, I developed a community based infection, which he thought came from a pedicure. He wasted no time in getting me to the hospital and operating. He saved my life...sepsis had set in and I spent many weeks after with a pic line. When I went back for my checkup, he said, and I will never forget..."That, my dear, is as closed to death as you will ever be." He was and will always be my hero....."Rest well good and Faith Servant"

I was always happy to see Paul in the audience when I was in charge at a meeting or presentation because I knew you could count on his to start or add to the discussion.
At last years SOA meeting Tom Dameron´s granddaughter, Laura- Shelby Dameron, and I had a short paper. I asked Paul to come and he came and added to the discussion after the presentation.

Paul and I spoke often about his extraordinary ability as an endurance athlete. He was the healthiest 70 year old I knew, and he was grateful for his good fortune. He passed doing what he loved - could there be any more perfect way to ascend?

I will literally carry part of Dr. Lachiewicz´s legacy with me forever. The now 12- & 8-year old hips he provided me have so far functioned just as he intended-- a solid foundation for the rest of my life. He was the 1st of 3 esteemed, local hip surgeons whom I planned to interview enroute to deciding who would be my TJR surgeon... after which I NEVER got to nos. 2 or 3 on my list. Dr. L. proved to be exactly the informed, skilled, conscientious & passionate surgeon I sought, with the added benefit of our sharing a common Polish heritage (my original name was "Stasiewicz"). Without a doubt he did live "a full & productive life," and I hope he won´t hold it against me for believing it was a life here still "too short." Fortunately, as we hold onto our enduring memories of him, our ultimate comfort is knowing that he now embraces Eternal life, where I pray that I will one day greet him again.

It is rare to meet someone and feel as though you have been friends forever, but that is how Paul made us feel. We are fortunate to have had him in our lives these last nine years. We send our deepest sympathy to Ave, Jayne, Anne, Mary Claire, Mark and John. As are all of yours, our hearts are broken.
