Hancock: Paul A. Nelson, 78, of Hancock passed away at U.P. Health System-Portage Hospital on Monday, August 5, 2024.
He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, graduated from Marquette University High School, and earned B.S, M.S., M.A., and PhD. degrees from the University of Wisconsin.
He was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Army in 1966 and served as a field artillery officer, operations research analyst, and comptroller staff officer.
He served on the faculty at Michigan Technological University for over 45 years and retired as Professor Emeritus of Economics in 2018.
Paul served as Secretary/Treasurer of Camp 266, SUVCW, and as Chaplain of Alfred E. Erickson Post 186, American Legion in Hancock.
Paul was very active in the Resurrection Catholic Church in Hancock, particularly in music and youth ministry.
He is survived by a brother, LTC Carl C. Nelson, Waupaca, Wisconsin, and close friends Kyle Forsman and Connie Nichols of Hancock.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock with Father Corey Litzner officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. before the mass on Tuesday. Burial will be in the American Legion Plot at Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock with the Copper Country Veterans Association and the Alfred Erickson Post 186 American Legion assisting with military honors.
