Obituary published on Legacy.com by Buchanan Funeral Home - Austin from Apr. 5 to Apr. 9, 2025.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Paul Eugene (Gene) Newman, age 79, who left us peacefully on April 2, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Gene was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend who always had a smile on his face.
Born on April 24, 1945, Gene was the beloved son of Paul and Betty Newman. He grew up in Scottsburg, where he ran Paul's Texaco, he was a dedicated hard worker at Regal & Arvins. Gene was known for his unwavering kindness, humility, and remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
Gene experienced the heartbreaking loss of his wife Linda, several years ago, a devastating event that shaped his journey. Despite his grief, he found love again with his partner, Martha, with whom he shared 14 delightful years. Their bond was a testament to the resilience of love, and together they created a home filled with warmth, joy, and mutual respect. Gene often expressed that meeting Martha was a second chance at happiness, and they cherished every moment together.
Gene was proud of his children, Sharon (Mike) Walls, Richard (Valerie) Newman and Vickie (Sarah) Newman, and his stepchildren Peggy (Tony) Hicks and Larry (Amy) Shuler. He was also the proud papaw of 13 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandson. He took great pride in all their achievements and was always there to support them through life's challenges. Gene taught them values of compassion, hard work, and integrity, so they could carry it forward in their own lives. His heart was vast enough to embrace everyone around him, and he demonstrated that family is not solely defined by blood but by love and connection.
Another passion of Gene's was his love for his CB radio equipment. He enjoyed spending hours communicating with friends and fellow enthusiasts, establishing connections that spanned across distances. His pursuit of this hobby allowed him to forge friendships and share stories, he was always eager to lean an ear or offer advice. Gene was an avid cook, tinkerer, thrift shopper, a lover of westerns, and beaches. He could often be found making extraordinary pineapple upside down cake, or homemade french onion soup, always with a twinkle in his eye. His warm spirit and generous heart will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Paul Eugene (Gene) Newman leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and resilience. He will forever be remembered in our hearts and will continue to inspire us to live life fully and generously.
