I will always remember Paul in cowboy hat and dark glasses and guitar singing "The Donne Variorum Blues." Always in my mind, always in my heart, always missed. Oh and the cajun two step with his beloved wife!

I can hardly believe it has been a year. I think of Paul almost every week, every week I teach Donne to my students. I tell my students about his "Donne Variorum blues," share him in this way, and yes his memory is and will continue to be a blessing. Achsah

I second the sadness we all feel and sympathy for his family as they mourn. The kindness to which so many people have referred was evident decades ago when he welcomed me to the John Donne Society and on so many occasions since. His many legacies include the central contributions to the Variorum and yes, the example he set of the human and humane values about which so many people have written, an example even more valuable right now.

Dear Linda and Paul's family,
I am simply heartbroken to learn today, November 1st, that Paul passed away on Saturday evening. I simply cannot believe he is gone so soon. He is one of my most beloved friends, from the Donne Society and more. For many years, we hung out, sang around the fountain at Gulfport, shared walks and talks, and of course his wonderful Donne Variorum blues. But I also met Paul some years ago (maybe the 90s?) when he was at Texas A&M and I was at U of Illinois, and we were at a conference of adminstrators (though I was just on a committee) concerned to push for multidimensional excellence, pushing against the narrow idea of what it was to be excellent. I found that, once again, we were on the same page, sharing the same values. Paul was one of the most ethical and kind people I have ever known in my life, an increasingly rare spirit.
And then there is my wonderful memory of Paul and Linda dancing the two step when I'd arranged cajun and zydeco music when the conference had moved to Baton Rouge and LSU. Paul and Linda, a beautiful couple. My heart is full, my eyes are overflowing. Sending love and the prayer that his memory may be a blessing for a long long time, to many people, and his soul bound up in the bond of life.

Paul was a great mentor and department chair, very kind and encouraging to graduate students and very supportive of our endeavors. He was kind; he was good. The world is sadder without him in it.

A wonderful, warm-hearted person. Paul made me feel welcome, almost 20 years ago, when I was a newcomer to Gulfport, MS and the Donne Society Conference. I've never forgotten it, and was always delighted and privileged in the years since to see him and enjoy in his company. Rest in peace, Paul. Condolences to your family.

Paul was one of the most generous, kindest people I had the privilege to get to know in the short time I lived in Texas. He and his wife were the first babysitters for our brand-new daughter in 2007, and being around them was like being enveloped in a hug -- I am sending all my love and condolences, and know that Paul left behind a huge legacy of kindness and compassion and a model of leadership I continue to try and emulate.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that Paul was one of my favorite human beings. His wisdom, kindness, and tireless efforts on behalf of many causes cannot be overstated. His generosity was boundless. His loss will be felt deeply, and his memory cherished fondly.

Truly a very kind hearted soul. There are only a handful of people that leave an everlasting impression and Dr. Parrish is one of those few. Strong fella that had the best of intentions. I will forever be grateful that I had the pleasure to work with you. May you rest in peace. Prayers to your family.

Someone, Paul´s son I think, once said that when Paul walked into any room, he was the smartest guy in the room. I agree. I have been in several rooms with Paul and other brilliant people, and Paul was not only the smartest but the most decent and kindest person in the room. For all his brilliance and accomplishments, there wasn´t an arrogant bone in his body. Rest well, my friend.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Dr. P. was a very caring, loving, fair, and wonderful man. He kept me at A&M when most wouldn´t have even cared. Since I was on ScoPro a few times during my undergrad...he and I became great friends. Then later on I worked with Linda in EPSY, needless to say we had a lot to talk about. Sending prayers and hugs.
