Paul Edward Smith, a man whose generosity and love knew no bounds, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2024, in
Lakeland, Florida. Born on Christmas Eve of 1948 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Paul's life was a testament to the values of dedication, service, and family.
Paul served his country with distinction as a Corporal in the Marines, where he was both a crew chief and gunner. His commitment to his nation was matched only by his devotion to his loved ones. He shared 26 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Mollie, and was a guiding light in the lives of his children, Cara Jean Peterson (Joe) and Gina Marie Smith. Paul also embraced his role as a stepfather to Melanie Hollis (William), Wes Evans (Jennifer), Aaron Evans, and the late Angel Evans. His siblings, Donna Almon, the late David Smith, Cathy Walker, and the late Elaine Smith, will remember him as a steadfast brother. Paul's legacy continues through his four grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and seven step-great-grandchildren, all of whom he cherished deeply.
After his military service, Paul applied his leadership skills to the construction industry as a skilled framer. His work ethic and camaraderie left a lasting impression on his colleagues and those he served through his profession. Paul's life was further enriched by his active involvement in the Catholic Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), where he formed enduring friendships and continued his lifelong commitment to service.
Paul's interests painted the picture of a man who embraced life with vigor and joy. He was a Marine to his core, embodying the values of loyalty and honor in every aspect of his life. His kind and giving nature made him a good father and a wonderful grandfather, affectionately known as "Pops" and "Papa" to those who adored him. Paul's generosity extended beyond his family, as he was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.
A one-of-a-kind comedian, Paul's wit and humor brought laughter and light to every gathering. His passion for fishing and thoroughbred horse racing reflected his adventurous spirit and love for animals. His black chihuahua, Rance, was a constant companion, and Paul's heart was big enough to embrace and rescue many "critters" from the community.
Generous and loving are the words that best describe Paul Edward Smith. His presence was a gift to all who knew him, and his memory will be cherished as a beacon of warmth and kindness. Paul's impact on the world was as profound as it was gentle, and his spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have felt his love.
Paul's life journey was remarkable, not only for the paths he chose but for the countless lives he touched along the way. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary man, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy will live on through the many hearts he has touched. Paul Edward Smith was truly a man of honor, and his memory will be held in the highest regard by all who knew him.
As we remember Paul, we reflect on a life well-lived, a life filled with purpose, laughter, and an abundance of love. He has left an indelible mark on this world, and though he will be deeply missed, we are grateful for the time we had with him. Rest in peace, Paul, knowing that your story is one of triumph, compassion, and unwavering love.
