Paul Stephas Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Baird Funeral Home - Bend on Jan. 13, 2026.
Paul Stephas, August 31, 1929 - December 14, 2025

Paul helped start the physics degree program at what is now Eastern Oregon University, and taught physics there for nearly 20 years from 1969 to 1988. He formed deep attachments with faculty and the students he mentored, and published numerous research articles.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, to Gustas and Crisoula (Capidaglis) Stephas, Paul was the youngest of four children.

He served in the Air Force as a radioman during the Korean War, then majored in physics at the University of Washington. He earned an M.S. in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic while working for General Electric, then took a physics research position at GE Vallecitos Atomic Laboratory.

While working at Vallecitos, Paul met and married analytic chemist Georgia Morton. They enjoyed auto rallying and the jazz clubs of San Francisco.

Paul returned to academia in 1962 and earned his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Oregon. His first professorship was at the University of British Columbia. In 1969, he was recruited to what was then Eastern Oregon College in La Grande. He and Georgia took every opportunity to get into the Blue and Wallowa mountains; because of college schedules their daughter Tamara grew up thinking every family spent much of the summer backpacking and fishing for rainbow trout.

Paul and Georgia retired to McMinnville Oregon, then to Hilo, Hawaii, their home base for many travels. After Georgia's death, Paul moved to the greater Portland area and continued to hike and travel. His last years were spent in Bend, Oregon near his daughter and son-in-law. Paul loved the outdoors and was an avid photographer. He enjoyed jazz and classical music, travel, amateur philosophizing, and deeply appreciated the visual arts. We will miss his wit, love of laughter, and enthusiasm for craft beer.

Survivors include daughter Tamara Stephas and son-in-law Michael Jochimsen of Bend Oregon, as well as nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by wife Georgia of 46 years, his parents, his sister Helen Stephas, and two brothers Peter and Menelaus "Manny" Stephas.

No service; a celebration of life is planned in the spring.

I just recently heard about Dr. Stephas´s passing from my brother. We moved to La Grande when I was 7 and started 2nd grade. I graduated from High School there in 1978 and wanted to attend Oregon State University to get a degree in Electrical Engineering. Unfortunately, neither I nor my parents, had the money to allow me to do so. Instead, I enrolled in the Physics program at, what was known back then, Eastern Oregon State College, or EOSC. I met Dr. Stephas in my first quarter and enjoyed his teaching and mentoring over the next four years before graduating in 1982. After graduating, I enrolled to become an U.S. Air Force Officer where I was able to receive both a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering during my 11-year career. I went on to work for the Dept. of Defense for another 33 years as an electrical and avionics engineer and am retiring soon. I´m giving you this background because if it weren´t for the teaching, guidance, advice, and friendliness of Dr. Stephas, this once introverted, shy, young man with low self-esteem never would have made it this far. I spent a total of 9 years in college and can say without hesitation Dr. Stephas was the best professor I ever had. I have many wonderful memories and stories of my time with him, his colleague, Dr. Schwarzkopf, and Dr. Hermanns, who was the head of the Chemistry Dept. at that time. Who would have ever thought you would find three highly intelligent, approachable, enthusiastic teachers in a little college in a small remote city in NE Oregon! I enjoyed his humor, his stories and get togethers at his house on 12th street and being in the Physics Club. Dr. Stephas made such a positive impact on the lives of so many young students during his time there. I consider myself so fortunate to be one of them. Eric French (now Eric Pierce-French), BS Physics, Class of ´82, residing in Dayton, OH.
