Paul Sullivan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brady & Fallon Funeral Home - Jamaica Plain on Dec. 9, 2024.
Paul William Sullivan. April 7, 1941, of Weston, formerly Wayland, Massachusetts, child of God, father, grandfather athlete, son, and friend died peacefully on December 7, 2024, surrounded by his children. He was 83. Paul Sullivan is lovingly survived by his five children and their families: Todd Sullivan, his wife Stacy, and their children Sydney, Sloane, and John Paul of West Bloomfield, Michigan; Sean Sullivan and his partner Jenny Corlett of Muir Beach, California; Courtney Homer, her husband Chris, and their children Sullivan and Bailey of Bluffton, South Carolina; Alina Sullivan Murray, her husband Richard, and their children Bolton, Logan, and Patrick of Natick, Massachusetts; and Ricardo Sullivan, his wife Jordan, and their son Cedric of Boynton Beach, Florida. Paul was the beloved son of the late Edith and John Sullivan and the youngest sibling of Edythe Ann McGoldrick, Patricia Thompson, Joan Carder, and John Sullivan. Born in Belmont, Massachusetts, Paul graduated from Belmont High School in 1959 and Harvard University in 1963. A remarkable athlete, Paul's accomplishments on the tennis court spanned decades. Paul was ranked #1 in New England as a junior and competed professionally for over 20 years, facing tennis legends like Don Budge, Bjorn Borg, and Arthur Ashe. He claimed five U.S. National Championships partnered with iconic champions such as Billie Jean King and Patti Hogan. He captained tennis teams at Belmont High, at Harvard his junior and senior years, as well as the Harvard-Yale team vs. Oxford-Cambridge at Wimbledon in 1962. In 1965, his family was named the USTA's first National Tennis Family of the Year. Off the court, Paul founded Paul Sullivan Sportswear and invented the first aluminum tennis racket, which later was sold as the Spaulding Smasher. Beyond his athletic and professional accomplishments, Paul is remembered by his countless friends of all ages. His true legacy lies in his kindness, faith, and generosity. A devout Catholic who attended daily Mass for decades, he volunteered at the St. Mary After School Program, supported those in need, and organized a beloved tennis event at Longwood Cricket Club. His warmth, passion, and ability to make everyone feel special will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Visiting hours at the Brady & Fallon Funeral Home, 10 Tower St. (Opp. Forest Hills MBTA Station) Jamaica Plain on Tuesday December 17 from 5-8 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church, 145 School St., Waltham on Wednesday December 18 at 10 am. Interment will follow at St. Joseph cemetery, West Roxbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Paul's honor to the St. Mary After School Program, where he shared his passion for tennis, deep faith, and boundless joy with children and others in God's embrace.

Oh, Paul, my good friend. We went through boot camp together at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. I was looking at my Timex watch just the other day, found in my drawer that you generously gave me during boot camp. It made me think of a wonderful person. You were a person that I would have loved to have been able to call my friend for life. God bless.

I met Paul at his `Serve to Win´ clinic at Longfellow in Wayland. He was immediately friendly, engaging and always quietly inspiring. He encouraged us relative hackers to play with more tenacity, through gentle encouragement and always a determined insistent stare. He made an impact with most of us and his clinic was fun to boot. Paul generously invited groups to Longwood to experience the famous grass courts where he had so much success. My condolences to his family, colleagues, and students. He will be missed.

Paul was a great man. He enjoyed life, loved his family, loved tennis and was able to share his love of tennis with others. I´m forever grateful that Paul was my tennis coach, and he also taught my kids. Rest in Peace. I hope you can play tennis in heaven. My sincere condolences to the entire family.

No one who knew Paul Sullivan at Longwood-and that includes nearly everyone-didn´t know what a special person he was. Certainly one of the club´s best players ever, he was also a humble, friendly leader who loved the game of tennis so much that he coordinated such an unique & very popular annual event as the "A players VS Over 70 Seniors" until his final season. No one but Paul could have pulled it off, or even had the spirit to try. He´ll be greatly missed & never forgotten.

My condolences to the Sullivan family. Paul was our neighbor growing up in Wayland. What a wonderful family to live next to. He helped light the spark to my, far more humble, tennis career giving me clothes and unlimited access to his lovely clay court. Very kind-hearted man.

"Trish, WHY are you rallying? HIT the ball !!" Boy will I miss those words and that Coach and that Selfless Man. What a generous Man. I first met him when I was 11 at an indoor court near Allandale Farm... I knew he was a special person, sort of a star. I learned so much from him and was always astonished by his level of patience. Quiet and optimistic. I will miss him very much. Longwood will not be the same.
I would like to extend my Deepest Sympathy to you kids. Todd, Seany, Court, Alina and Ricardo. You were blessed to have him as your Father. He will be with you forever.

I had the honor of getting to know Paul when our respective sons played AAU baseball together over a 7 year span. Paul was a great person and an amazing Dad. Our families spent some memorable times together at the baseball field and on national trips. My sincere condolences to Paul´s wonderful family. He will be missed
