Paul Lucian Wetherall, age 82, of Knoxville, TN, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 31, 2024. He was born on October 8, 1942 in Canton, Ohio to the late Reubin Cornelius Wetherall and Betty Jane Vermillion Wetherall. After spending his first ten years in Ashland, Ohio, his family moved to Huntington, West Virginia where he would live into his early adult life. Paul attended Marshall University and graduated with a Bachelor's of the Arts in Political Science in 1964. He was a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and he often credited this brotherhood with providing him moral and intellectual guidance that prepared him for his life ahead.
Upon graduation from Marshall, Paul enlisted in the United States Army Reserves where he served honorably for six years. During this time he began what would become an almost sixty-year career in the insurance and financial planning industry, beginning with Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company (later merging with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company). As a professional he achieved his Chartered Life Underwriter ("CLU"), Chartered Financial Consultant ("ChFC"), and held many leadership roles in both organizations.
In 2008, he established an independent business in his own name, Wetherall Financial Services. Paul had three great loves: God, his family and his clients. He always said he wanted to work, taking care of "his people" until the end, and he did just that.
He is survived by his wife of thirty-eight years, Josephine ("Jo" ) Wilkerson Wetherall, sons Neale Lucian Wetherall (Lizz), Gibbs Hill Wetherall (Rachel), and Shayne Michael Wetherall (from a previous Marriage); grandchildren McCoy Smith Wetherall, Neale Lucian Wetherall Jr., Gibbs Revere Wetherall, and two more blessings of life arriving in 2025.
Paul was a proud Episcopalian and humble servant to his church and community. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, November 4, 2024 at 3:00 pm ET at The Episcopal Church of the Ascension (800 S. Northshore Drive, Knoxville, TN 37919). The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Episcopal Church of the Ascension, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Foundation Scholarship Program, or the Webb School of Knoxville.
