CHENEYVILLE - Paul D. Ziemnisky Sr., 75, of Cheneyville passed away at 2:47 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 10, 2023) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
He was born April 4, 1947, in Westerly, R.I., the son of Anthony W. and Mella M. (Boron) Ziemnisky. He married Patti J. Ervin on Oct. 27, 1995, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Hoopeston. She survives.
He is also survived by two sons, Paul (Cindy) Ziemnisky Jr. of Libertyville and Chris (Kendra) Ziemnisky of Danville; one sister, Ann (Jeff) McCrave; a twin brother, Peter Ziemnisky of Providence, R.I.; seven grandchildren, Tayler, Christian, Addyson, Alyza, Kelsey, Jenna and Cara; two great-grandchildren, Keatyn and Audrielle; one niece, Jessica Goins; and one nephew, Jason Blackburn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Anthony.
Paul served in the U.S. Air Force for six years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Service Star and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was a proud member of the VFW and American Legion.
After the war, he joined the post office, where he worked his way up from carrier to postmaster, ultimately spending 37 years. In his last few years, he was asked to "clean-up" troubled post offices across the state. He took pride in ensuring people received their mail on time.
Paul was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Hoopeston. He was passionate about his gardening, RV travel trips, Chicago Cubs baseball and his three cats, Blackie, Princess and Ninja. He also enjoyed collecting stamps, but most importantly, seeing and hearing about his grandchildren's ventures.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, at Anderson Funeral Home, 427 E. Main St., Hoopeston. The funeral service will follow the visitation and will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with Father Ignatius Mulenda officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hill Cemetery, Hoopeston.
