Winthrop- Paula M. (Locke) Gaudet, of Winthrop, Maine, passed away at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta on Friday, August 29, 2025. She is the loving wife of Edward S. Gaudet, with whom she shared 57 years of marriage.
She was born to Dr. John and Mary (Kerwin) Locke in Worcester, Massachusetts, on February 9, 1942. She went to local elementary schools and graduated from Notre Dame Academy and Worcester State University. Upon graduation from college, Paula began her teaching career at Grafton Street School teaching Kindergarten and continued to take courses at Assumption College in Worcester.
Paula married Edward S. Gaudet on February 10, 1968, on a lovely, snowy day. They honeymooned skiing in the Laurentions, and then settled in the Springfield, MA area where Ed worked for IBM and Paula taught in West Springfield, MA. She completed her Masters Degree at Westfield State University and they relocated to Maine where they lived first in Readfield then in Winthrop. Paula taught in Waterville, Maine and happily spent the remainder of her career in Winthrop as a teacher, assistant principal, and superintendent of schools.
A seeker of knowledge and to hone her craft, she continued her studies at the University of Southern Maine and University of Maine in Orono, Maine earning her administrative certification. Throughout her teaching career she maintained enduring interest and involvement in the arts, especially music, theater and the visual arts, all of which enhanced her approach to teaching.
With friends she enjoyed annual Broadway show trips, annual trekking on Mohegan Island and traveling the country with Ed. She loved to kayak in the peace and calm of Narrows Pond. Upon retiring in 2005, she became an active volunteer most recently on the Board of Visitors at the University of Maine Augusta, Board of the Winthrop Education Corporation and the Board of Trustees at Theater at Monmouth, Maine. She was also an active member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International.
She leaves behind her loving husband Ed Gaudet of Winthrop, her sister Fran Halverson and brother-in-law Jack Halverson of NC, her nephew Jon Halverson, Ret. USMC and his wife Ellen of Virginia Beach. Her godson and nephew Andrew Halverson of MD, as well as five grandnephews, each of whom was very special to her. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Dianne Gaudet and her husband Steve Norton of Freeport. Paula also leaves many special friends who she shared her interests, humor and sense of adventure.
Her pets will be glad to welcome her to the other side, including labs Wendy, Hydro and Carbon, Goldens KC and Otis, kitties Mitty and Olivia Newton John, Royal Golden Boy and Benny the Griffon. a handsome buckskin quarter horse with a mind of his own.
She is predeceased by her sister-in-law Sylvia Damone and her nephew Dale Erickson.

Paula's Memorial Service will be in the Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop, on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Immediately following services there will be a luncheon at the Augusta Country Club.
