Peggy Marcenia "Marcy" Cherry

Peggy Marcenia “Marcy” Cherry, 89, of Schertz, TX passed peacefully from complications of a stroke on Friday, September 5, 2025, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and chosen children. Marcy was born December 27, 1935, in Megargel, Texas to Delma Cockroft Mayes and Joe Walter Mayes. They resided in Wichita Falls, Texas and she graduated from Wichita Falls High School, nicknamed Old High. She married her husband Lt. Richard “Dick” Cherry in 1955 when he was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base, and they began their travels being stationed from the Canadian border to the Mexican border and coast to coast. Marcy and Dick had four children: Lisa, Christina, Jennifer and Richard, Jr. while Marcy faithfully served her country and her family as an officer’s wife through multiple duty stations moving 19 times in 22 years until settling in Schertz in 1970. During that time, she was very active in the Officer’s Wives Club at every duty station, and she found a way to be the council leader and a troop leader in the Girl Scouts of America.

After Dick retired from the military in 1973, Marcy started her career in retail at Joske’s of Texas in 1976 and continued through with Dillard’s earning multiple “Salesperson of the Year” awards. She was affectionately known as “The Sock Lady” in the Men’s department and she helped train many department managers as they began their careers in retail. During this time, Marcy and Dick were active members of the Alamo A’s Model A Club enjoying travel and friends joined together by the love of antique cars. They toured the countryside of Texas participating in parades and swap meets. Marcy was an avid gardener growing fruits, vegetables, and flowers in her many garden areas. She became a Master Gardener and earned her Wholesale Floral Nursery license.

Marcy retired from Dillard’s in 1991 and the desire to see the full United States led them to travel across the United States and Canada for 10 years as the Advance Marketing Team for the King Royal Circus. They worked together for this independent fund-raising circus and saw most of the United States one tiny town at a time. Finally, they retired from the long traveling road as they had been blessed with 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren to get to know and visit.

Marcy had a smile bigger than Texas and an infectious laugh that engaged all who met her. She was always a bit mischievous, and she was a resourceful inventor making use of her entire collection of “I might need that someday” stuff. Marcy was a fabulous cook in the down-home style that she grew up with, and she was famous for her chicken fried steak, Swedish meatballs, and macaroni and cheese. She loved to host parties and arrange events. She was an excellent planner including all the tiny touches that let her guests know they were uniquely considered. Marcy had an engaging spirit and a spark in her soul that made everyone feel like they’d made a new best friend or found their “other Mom.” Marcy was overjoyed to meet her Lord and Savior and now knows complete joy as she is no longer captive in an earthly body.

Peggy Marcenia “Marcy” Cherry will be interned with her husband Lt. Col. Richard N. Cherry in a private ceremony at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery on Friday, October 24th. There will be a celebration of her life on Friday evening at her home with family and friends on Friday, October 24th, 2025, at 4:30 pm.
