Peggy Ann Payne Farris, age 87, of Bessemer City born on December 28, 1936, to the late Thurn and Kathleen Hutchins Payne. She went on her final trip Monday, August 19, 2024, at Robin Johnson House. This is her farewell tour, “Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night, sailed off in a wooden shoe, — Sailed on a river of crystal light., into a sea of dew.” She loved to travel in any form, many trips out west riding motorcycles with her husband Lewis. Traveled to England, Spain, Australia, and Mexico. Taking bus trips with Toney Tours and Christian Tours. Many trips to the beach, where she and Lewis went to the Bowery and met the Alabama Band. They would also go clogging on that red, white, and blue bus with AB & Sarah Flowers and Bud & Mert Goines. She was a long and faithful member of Long Creek Presbyterian Church. Peggy worked at First Citizens Bank in Bessemer City for several years, then went to Rutherford Electric MC for 45 years in 1961 until retiring in 2006. She had many interests to include sewing, gardening, and working in her flowers. Her start to summer was always the first tomato sandwich of the year from her garden. She loved her pets Doby, Tar Baby, Possum, & Pepper. To know her was to love her and many did.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters Sarah Flowers and Jean Wooten.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 70 plus years Arthur “Lewis” Farris; son Dick Farris (Jenny Carrington); daughter Susanne Farris Pearson (Gary); brother John Payne; friends Nancy England, Kermit Hutchins, Sharon Gentry, and the late Bonnie & Dennis Bridges and Violet, along with others that are too many to list; and many nieces and nephews that loved her dearly.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 26, 2024, from 2:00 pm – 2:45 pm at Long Creek Presbyterian Church in Bessemer City. The funeral service to celebrate Peggy’s life will follow at 3:00 pm with Pastor Will Upchurch officiating. Burial will follow at Sunnyside Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Robin Johnson Hospice House.
