Penelope Harrison Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pearson Funeral Home on Feb. 2, 2023.
Penelope "Penny" Allis Harrison, b. May 8, 1939, died peacefully on January 31, 2023. Penny was the daughter of Winston Pope Harrison (d. 1982) and Kitty Owen Harrison (d. 1993), sister of Winston Pope Harrison Jr (d. 1958) and the granddaughter of 41st mayor of Louisville William B. Harrison (1927-33) and his wife Margaret Allis Harrison. She attended Louisville Collegiate School followed by Sweet Briar College where she received an AB in English (1961). She was a keen horsewoman and tennis player in her childhood; many of her favorite memories involved her dog, Copper.
Penny had a passion for knowledge and spent her life teaching and learning. She taught at the Sayre School in Lexington and Louisville Collegiate School before studying for and receiving a Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1982 (Department of Special Education). She went on to teach at Indiana University-Fort Wayne (1982-83) and thereafter served as the Director for Psychoeducational Services at the University of Louisville's Child Evaluation Center, retiring in 1994.
Penny loved reading, dogs, cats and especially her grandson. She is survived by her daughter Katherine Owen Eldred, her son Marshall Polk Eldred III (Laura Weinstein), and grandson Marshall Polk Eldred IV. The family thanks the staff of Masonic Homes for their loving care and attention to Penny in her last years. Most importantly, the family gives its grateful thanks to Penny's friends and caregivers Carolyn Waller and Sandy Metry. Carolyn and Sandy's tireless support of Penny in her final years was a true gift of compassion. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hosparus Health of Louisville (https://hosparushealth.org).
A private graveside ceremony will be held on Friday February 3 at Cave Hill Cemetery.
