Penelope Joan Hughes (nee Smith) passed away peacefully on February 28, 2025. She was born on March 24, 1942, in Oak Park, Illinois, daughter to Thomas Norman and Catherine Marie (nee Solon) Smith and loving sister to Kathleen (George) Anderson, MaryAnn (William) Powers, Thomas (Melinda) Smith, Joan (Robert) Boehmer and Sharon (Thomas) Leyden. She was a beloved Aunt and Cousin to many generations. Penelope is survived by her children, Penelope Beckhardt, Gene Hughes, Stephanie (Michael) Worobey, Kerry Bleuher and Heather Hughes. As well as her cherished grandchildren, Megan and Clark (Abby) Worobey, Liam, Sophia, Terese and Finnegan Bleuher and Grace Beckhardt.
Penelope, a resident of Naperville, raised her children in Darien for over 20 years where she cheered at many swimming and cross country meets. She so enjoyed the pool and playing tennis. She especially thrived at forging lasting friendships with those around her. One of her most important roles over the last 30 years was that of Grandma, spending countless hours at basketball, swimming, soccer, water polo, volleyball, academic and church events, always providing encouraging words of love, support and treats. She treasured her time with each of her grandchildren.
Penelope flourished in her long career in hospitality and property management including her years in the Chicago Concierge Association. She always appreciated the social engagement of her work which allowed her to make wonderful connections and travel the world.
Visitation, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, be held at 9:00am on March 8, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 1370 E. 87th Street, Naperville, IL 60565. Interment will be private. A celebration of life will be held immediately following Mass.
Penelope was a remarkable and devoted long-term care giver to her son, Gene. To honor her commitment, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The DuPage Care Center Foundation, 400 N County Farm Road, Wheaton, IL 60187 or online at https://dpccfoundation.org/about-us/contact-us/.

Penny was a long-time member of the NCA and someone that I've known for probably close to 20 years as an NCA colleague and hospitality friend. She always had a smile and a kind word when she saw and greeted you. Penny was such a special person and will be missed by many!
