Peter Lewis Berghold

Peter Lewis Berghold, 68, passed away Friday, November 22, 2024.
A memorial service will be held at Ignite Church Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 2 PM, with Pastor Jason Lineberger officiating. A burial service will be held at a later date in Bourne, MA.
Peter grew up in Dorchester and Rockland, MA, graduating from Rockland High School. He went on to serve in the U. S. Navy for 6 years. His first duty station was at the New London submarine base. He was proud to have served on the original crew of the USS Cushing DD 985, which was commissioned and home ported from San Diego. He also had the opportunity to stand watch of the Nautilus, which was the first nuclear submarine. Following his naval service, Peter moved with his family to northern New Jersey, until they were blessed by God with a home of their own in Tinton Falls, NJ. While in New Jersey, Peter began a career as a computer engineer working for HP, AT&T, IBM, and Mount Sinai/NYU Medical Center. He even served as an adjunct professor for City University of NY teaching programming. In April of 2020, Peter retired with his family to Ayden, NC, where he has been an active member of Ignite Church. He enjoyed being a member of the American Legion, Post 289 in Ayden, who were a tremendous and generous source of support to Peter since 2020; and had previously served as Post Commander for Post 346 in Neptune, NJ.
Peter had a fierce love for Jesus Christ and loved his church family dearly. Folks in Ayden will remember him as the blue streak on his mobility scooter as he drove through town and made so many friends. He was known for his hospitality and enjoyed feeding people both physically and spiritually. He is now running with the Lord Jesus in heaven.
Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Jane Berghold; and sisters-in-law, Jean Salamini, Marie Sergio, Dorothy Pagani, and Susan Tremblay.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Eleanor "Ellie" Berghold; daughter, Michelle "Shelly" Louise Berghold; son, David Aaron Berghold; one grandson, lovingly called "Sweet Potato" by his Opa; niece, Ana Pagani, who he loved like a daughter, all of Ayden; sister-in-law, Dianne Tremblay; and brothers-in-law, Raymond Tremblay and wife, Delores, David Tremblay and Joseph Sergio.
