Beloved son, husband, father, brother, and friend. P. Scott Frederick passed away on Friday, September 13th. He was known to most as Scott. He was born on May 17, 1969, in Staten Island, NY to Peter Frederick and Georgia Torns. Just a couple of months after he was born his family moved to Maryland. As a child he loved riding his three-wheel racer and spending his summers on the neighborhood swim team.
He attended Seneca Valley High School and graduated in 1987. During his high school years, Scott was able to showcase his talents on the volleyball team and in the jazz band, where he played the baritone saxophone. Immediately following high school, he attended the University of Maryland in College Park. He graduated in 1991 with a degree in history. Shortly after graduation, Scott met Katherine, who became his wife on July 31, 1993. At the time of his death, they had been married for 31 years.
Even as a young man entering the work force, Scott was highly driven and motivated to succeed. He began his career in banking working for Chevy Chase Bank. He enjoyed his work and quickly moved up, becoming the assistant manager of the Pennsylvania Avenue branch and ultimately becoming the manager of the Wisconsin Avenue branch, both in Washington, DC. While he was growing his career, his family grew too. His first daughter, Ashtyn was born on April 26, 1997. A few years later, Scott continued his career with a move to Citibank, where he joined the Commercial Banking Group. At the same time, he was making this career shift, he also celebrated the birth of his son Carson, on November 28, 2001. Scott continued to work for Citibank and was promoted to Senior Vice President in the Commercial Banking Group. His family continued to grow with the birth of his daughter Regan on April 6, 2005.
Unfortunately, an esthesioneuroblastoma cancer diagnosis in 2011 halted his career, as Scott needed to put his energy towards health and healing. During his 13-year cancer battle, Scott endured multiple surgeries, lost vision in his left eye, received chemotherapy twice, received 4 types of radiation, and eventually, in the last year lost his sight completely. Throughout this time, Scott stayed positive, kept his faith strong, and devoted time to his family. To keep growing in his faith, he joined a weekly bible study and a small group at church, becoming part of a group of men who affectionately call themselves "The Knuckleheads." He also took time to volunteer at Habitat for Humanity, held a position on the church finance committee and later the ARC preschool board, and became a referee and coach for Carson's swim teams. As each of his children reached the age of learning to drive, Scott with his calm demeanor, was the better parent to take on that monumental task. He spent countless hours teaching them the rules of the road and helping them log the necessary driving hours.
Scott also spent time doing things that he enjoyed, like playing golf. He often played with friends, neighbors, his father and sister. He was able to pursue some new interests too, including his interest in muscle cars. He was all too happy to share this love with Carson. Over the past few years, they purchased a series of cars, trading up one for another, starting with a Ford Mustang and then trading it for a Dodge Challenger. As Scott faced the loss of his sight, they switched their focus to a Tesla, with the hope of the self driving capabilities. During this time, Scott also developed his musical talents. He took a few guitar lessons but quickly shifted to the bass guitar and basically taught himself to play it using YouTube. Not long after, he auditioned for and became a member of the band "She's Unhinged." He enjoyed practicing with the band several times a week and playing at many local events. The music, the performance, and the members of the band were a huge source of support for Scott.
We will cherish the memories, but he will be deeply missed by his family and friends. His Celebration of Life will be held at Oakdale Church on Saturday, October 5th at 1pm. The church address is 3425 Emory Church Road in Olney.
