Peter James Garvey, 74, of the Silver Ridge Park Westerly section of Berkeley Twp. NJ, formerly of Ridgefield Park died on October 9, 2024. Son of the late Bernard P. and Marion E. (nee Hendricks).
Predeceased by his brother, Timothy and brother-in-law Hank Savino. Survived by his cherished spouse Francine (nee Flora), intrepid son James T. and his husband John Alvarez, adored daughter Victoria R. Garvey, her husband Matthew Kodner, and their daughter Lenore Marie. Also survived by five sisters, Ellen Savino, Bernice Koch (Timothy), Elizabeth Sorrentino (Philip), Marion Ruff (James), Margaret Kowalchuk (John), sisters-in-law Karin Garvey, Rose Flora and Dorothy Flora Cartier (Christopher), 13 nieces and nephews, and 7 grand nieces and nephews. Also by loyal and trusted friends Steve and Kevin.
Peter worked as a network technician for Verizon for 42 years, and subsequently for First Student Bus Lines for 5 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam conflict era, serving with pride and distinction as a ward corpsman in the ICU of the U.S. Naval Hospital on Guam, M.I. He was a 1968 graduate of Bergen Catholic High School, Oradell, and a 1983 BS Summa Cum Laude graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck. After moving to "Westerly" in 2016, he and wife Fran became parishioners of St. Maximilian Kolbe R.C. Church.
He served as financial secretary of the SRPW Men's Club. He was also a member of the Navy Lakehurst Historical Society, serving as a tour guide at its Heritage Center, which afforded him the opportunity to express his deep appreciation of military and aviation history. Peter was a gregarious soul, an informed conversationalist, and an attentive listener. He was never more pleased than when trying to help another person feel better. He was also an avid car guy, rock music fan, card player, and diligent runner turned walker. Above all, he cherished his personal relationship with every member of his loving extended family, his true and stalwart friends, and his holy Catholic faith. "Speak of me as you might find, but always know it was heaven here with all of you."
The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, October 14, 2024 from 3pm -7pm at The Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals 145 St. Catherine Blvd., Toms River, NJ 08755. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 10am at St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, Berkeley Township, NJ. Burial to follow Fairview Cemetery, Fairview, NJ
