COLCHESTER – Peter Mattras, 70, died unexpectedly after a fall at his home in Colchester on Monday, February 24, 2025.
Peter was born in Norwich on April 21, 1954, to the late Joseph and Eugenia (Misiaszek) Mattras. After a distinguished high school career in Griswold, where he excelled at cross-country track competition, he attended Mitchell College in New London and then continued at the University of New Haven, graduating with his Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice.
He went on to a 32-year career as a Special Claims Adjuster in the insurance industry, specializing in natural disasters and major building-contracting claims, and earning a reputation for the fairness and thoroughness of his investigations. Even during retirement, Peter maintained close, social friendships with many of his insurance colleagues.
His professional knowledge and his father's construction experience enabled them to perform many renovations of his home and family real-estate. Those projects led to a strong bond between Peter and his father.
Peter's interest in automotive technology included regular attendance at the annual Mohegan Sun Car Show with his nephew, Anthony. Many similar events were shared with other family members.
An imposing athlete, Peter enjoyed life thoroughly including following the New York Giants, and the many activities of his diverse family. He was a Life Member of Willimantic Lodge #1311 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He also enjoyed a local group of friends who would meet at McDonalds in Colchester every morning to begin their day. Peter's community involvement included regular contributions to the blood drives of the American Red Cross.
Especially in his retirement, he was a courageous and intrepid solo traveler, driving his Sunlight Recreational Vehicle throughout most of the U.S. states, including several Alaskan explorations. These numerous expeditions would last weeks to months at a time as he enjoyed all our country had to offer-including Arctic Circle crossings and spectacular national parks.
As a classmate of Griswold High School in 1973, he maintained close connections to his school friends, serving as an active volunteer for the planning of his 45th and 50th reunions. He throughly enjoyed their meetings and frequent post-reunion gatherings.
Throughout his life, Peter was known as a dedicated son, brother, brother-in-law, generous uncle, and great-uncle, and friend. He is survived by his sisters: Joreen Mattras of Preston; Deborah Good and her husband Anthony of Preston; and Nina J. Price of Pinellas Park, Florida; his nephews, Anthony J. Good Jr. and his wife Kaitlyn of Niantic; Michael J. Good, his wife Dr. Victoria Good, and his great-nephew Lucas Good all from Greer, South Carolina. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother-in-law, James R. Price.
