I remember starting off at St. John Vianney as a shy overwhelmed freshman and because it was alphabetical, Pete McGuigan was seated directly across from me also looking very shy and quiet too...even more than me!
Pete and the rest of the team always looked gaunt and hungry during wrestling season trying to stay in their weight category, and I remember in senior year they had a very good baseball team, and Maura, his little 9 yr. old sister would be talking to me while she proudly watched her big brother, Pete, play baseball.
When my sister opened up a little Irish style bake shop that moved to its Sea Girt location in 1993, Pete surprised me by stopping in...and I didn't recognize him at first! When I tried to organize an SJV reunion in 2007, Pete was one of only 10 people who replied and sent his check in early.
We always had great conversations but my favorite memory was the last time I spoke with him when we had our last reunion at Tom and Theresa Ganter's house in October 2017. We were at the little bar next to the kitchen talking nonstop about life...college, current politics, radio stations we listened to, etc. ....it was such a good conversation that I always remembered how much I enjoyed talking to him...he had a mischievous sense of humor and was always very down to earth, and we were huddled in the corner laughing and exchanging funny stories for a long time. I always thought we would have many more conversations at other get togethers, and now I know we won't..... I'll always wish we could have, but I guess one can only be grateful that the moments in life were there at all...It was so good to know him and it makes me realize that we were all very lucky to have had him in our high school class.
