Peter "Pete" Ramage Obituary Peter "Pete" Ramage, a lifelong resident and dedicated civic leader of Etna, Pennsylvania, was called home on Friday, January 17, 2025, at St. Margaret Hospital. He was 86 years old.
Born on October 30, 1938, to the late Peter J. and Margaret E. Ramage, Pete attended All Saints Grade School and graduated from Etna High School in 1956, where he was recognized as an all-star basketball player. Following high school, he served four years in the U.S. Navy as a Communication Technician. Upon his return, Pete earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Duquesne University in 1965, followed by a master's degree in 1968 and a Principal Administrator's certificate in 1972.
Pete dedicated over three decades to the Pittsburgh Public School system, beginning as a math teacher in 1965 and advancing to Vice Principal in 1988, a role he held until his retirement in 1996. Not one to resist a call into service, he became the principal of All Saints Catholic Grade School from 1998 until its closure in 2004 due to the devastating flood caused by Hurricane Ivan. He also served as interim principal of Holy Spirit Catholic Grade School in 2006.
A pillar of the Etna community, Pete's commitment to public service was unparalleled. He began his tenure on the Etna Borough Council in 1970 and served as Council President for 46 years, stepping down in 2022. His leadership and dedication were instrumental in shaping the borough's recent resurgence and redevelopment.
Beyond his council duties, Pete was actively involved in numerous organizations. He was a delegate to the Three Rivers Wet Weather Basin Group since its inception, served as a delegate to the North Hills Council of Governments from 1989 to 2019 (Chairman from 1996-1997), and was a founding member of the Etna Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) in 2001, serving as its President from 2010 to 2021. In 2000, he was named Oakmont Elks Citizen of the Year for his service as Chair of the Scholarship Committee. Additionally, Pete served as President of the St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Matthew Parish, All Saints Church, and volunteered for the organization for over 15 years.
Pete is survived by his wife of 28 years, Mary Ellen Ramage; his twin daughters, Colleen Ramage and Christine (Joseph) Balistrieri, twin daughters, Connie (Tom) Elrick and Carla (Chaz) Minnich; and nine grandchildren, Jason, Sarah, Joshua, Michael, Lauren, Chloe, Callie, Alex, and Noah. He is also survived by his sister, Joanne Tomiczek (John), of Laurel Burrell, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 23 years, Margaret "Peggy" Burgo, and his sister, Marion Saeli (Tom).
Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, January 21st from 12 to 4 p.m and 6 to 8 p.m and Wednesday, January 22nd from 12 to 4 p.m and 6 to 8 p.m at Neely Funeral Home, 2208 Mt Royal Blvd, Glenshaw, PA 15116.
