Edward "Peter" Ryan passed away on Sunday September 24th at the age of 83. Born and raised in Jersey City, NJ, Peter attended Newark Academy before accepting a scholarship to Ithaca College where he carried on his athletic passion as both a hockey and baseball star. Peter's raw athletic talent and love of sports permeated his entire life, and he seemed capable of easily picking up any new physical challenge and drawing in a crowd to participate. After planting the first posts at the D Street beach in Seaside, NJ to initiate a decades long tradition of raucous beach volleyball, Peter became a founding member of a Manhattan volleyball group that inspired many of his greatest life-long friendships.
Peter's second passion was his career as an international equities trader, that lasted over four decades, and took him around the world multiple times. Recognized as a pioneer in the industry, Peter leveraged skill and charisma to initiate novel international trading partnerships that are a common part of the business today. For those who knew him, Peter was gregarious and likeable, and his business relationships often doubled as meaningful friendships that were emblematic of his social nature. During his career, Peter spent time at Credit Lyonnais, Hoare Govett, Morgan Stanley, and Arnold and S. Bleichroder. and proudly served on the International Committee at the Security Traders Association of New York (STANY) for over 15 years.
Peter spent most of his life, and raised his family in lower Manhattan, where he became inextricably linked to Grammercy Park, and the neighborhood around it. As president of his coop board at 1 Lexington Avenue, and president of the Grammercy Park Neighborhood Association for nearly three decades, Peter was a fixture of neighborhood life. Whether through the annual "Clean and Green" for residents around the park, or the initiation of the traditional Grammercy Park Christmas tree, Peter reveled in bringing people together, and was always happy to be at the center of the action.
Preceded by his adoring wife, Carol, in January 2023, Peter is survived by his three children: Peter of West Tisbury, Massachusetts, Christopher of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Emily (Ryan) Escott of Princeton, New Jersey. He is also survived by his three grandchildren Eddie, Griffin, and Willa whom he loved very much.
The family will receive relatives and friends Sunday October 1st from 3:00 pm through 7pm at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 809 NW Central Ave., Seaside Park, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday October 2nd at 10:00am at St. Catharine of Siena RC Church of the Parish of St. Junipero Serra, Seaside Park, NJ.
