Peter K. Shepherd, 78, passed away on July 14 at Rochester General Hospital. A beloved husband, brother, uncle, great-uncle and friend, he will be deeply missed.
Pete was the first child of the late Captain Maurice and Frances Codey Shepherd. He graduated from Oswego Catholic High School in 1964, and was the first member of his family to obtain a college education, graduating from Saint John Fisher College in 1968.
After college, Pete attended the U.S. Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, and served as a Lieutenant on the USS Fulton in New London Connecticut. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Pete worked for over 30 years with the Rochester Regional Transit Service, retiring as Director of Scheduling.
After retirement, Pete and Nancy, his wife of 55 years, enjoyed train travel throughout the United States, often stopping to enjoy various historical locations, zoos and nature preserves. He had a lifelong enthusiasm for trains, and enjoyed sharing his extensive knowledge of their history, serving as National Director of the Nickel Plate Road Historical and Technical Society and as a long-time editor of the Nickel Plate Road quarterly magazine.
Cherishing his memory, in addition to his wife Nancy, are a brother, Chris; along with many nieces and nephews, Kimberly Hanscomb, Ann Schreier, Patti Luce, Margaret Crammer and Jeannette Buttler, Jill Williams, William Osterman, James Osterman, Laurie Seda, Robert Osterman, Christopher Osterman, Wendy Lemus, April Love, and many great nephews and nieces.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held Saturday on August 2 at 10:30 AM at the Church of the Assumption, 20 East Avenue in Fairport with a gravesite committal service to follow at 12:15 pm
at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
