Peter Yi Zhang Obituary

Published by Douglass & Zook Funeral and Cremation Services on Jul. 26, 2021.
Peter Yi Zhang, age 35, passed peacefully in the arms of his loved ones on July 26th, 2021, at his parent's home in Duarte, California after a courageous battle with cancer. On November 5th, 1985, Peter was born in Guangzhou, China to his mother, Kit Chun Wong and his father, Yau Yee Cheung. Growing up, Peter enjoyed spending time with his friends, playing hockey, and caring for his childhood dog, Shawn. He graduated from Temple City High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly after graduation. He served 8 years in the Army, including two tours in Iraq. Following his service, Peter pursued a career in law; he graduated from college and was accepted into law school in 2020. A life-long lover of food and wine, Peter worked in hospitality and food service for over 15 years. In 2018, Peter married Hui-Shurn Yong in New York City, NY. Peter is survived by his wife, his parents, his three sisters, and numerous others. In addition to spending time with his loved ones, Peter had a love for traveling, basking in nature, and learning. Peter was quiet in nature, but everywhere he went, Peter touched the hearts of many and became a beloved member of every community he lived in. He was self-less and thoughtful, even at the end of his life and throughout his battle with cancer. As a Jedi, he served, studied, and lived whole-heartedly with dedication and no regrets. Family and friends are invited to attend memorial service on Thursday, August 12th @ 9AM at Douglass & Zook in Monrovia, followed by Riverside National Cemetery. Celebration of Life gathering to follow at Capital Seafood Restaurant in Arcadia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Children's Health Fund (https://www.childrenshealthfund.org) or No Kid Hungry (https://www.nokidhungry.org). Truth be told about Peter’s culinary skill beyond his “Midnight Noodles” ....a delightful and memorable evening of a scrumptious dinner cooked by Peter on his first meeting with us, visiting from Australia and Malaysia then.

Peter, the silence in the noise, the strength in the acceptance of “the way it is”, will not be easily forgotten.

Me and him were a lot of like. We damaged two vehicles together in Iraq because we couldn't decide who was in charge of the parking. We broke a mirror and something else. But in the end he admitted that he had made the mistake as the ground guide. It took a lot of courage to have done that in front of everyone. He got yelled at badly and took it like a man. Very few would have done that. It was an honor to have served with him. Had nothing but the absolute highest respect for him after that...

Peter was a hell of a guy, brave, a fighter to the very end. I'm truly blessed to have you in my life. I will cherish every moment we had growing up and growing old. You will always be in my heart, and every dish I ever make. Until we see each other, rest in power brotha.
