In 1971 I briefly worked as a secretary for Peyton Hawes at his law firm in downtown Atlanta. A fine man, a close friend of Jimmy Carter, who confided to Peyton that he was considering running for President. This was the first I knew of Jimmy Carter, whom I later respected as also a fine man.

Such sad news to stumble upon tonight! I'm a little late to learning of Peyton's passing. What a legacy he leaves, tho. I worked with him briefly 30yrs ago @ his downtown Atlanta office. What a wonderful, generous, thoughtful man he was! He gave me the kindest compliment once and I treasure it to this day. Fond memories of him and grateful for his gentle heart. Thoughts and prayers for his family.

I had the good fortune to work for Peyton Hawes for a little while at his downtown office when I moved to Atlanta in 1971. He was a kind, insightful man. One day he took me aside and said, "My good friend Jimmy Carter told me he plans to run for President. Do you think he's lost his mind?" Indeed, Peyton, Jimmy's mind is still functioning very well, and I'm sure he misses you.

I was a law clerk for Peyton's father, and first met Peyton, Jr. when I entered college at the University of Virginia. Peyton was in the law school at the time, and he offered me some good advice about the school. I saw Peyton off and on in Atlanta while practicing law there, and he and his firm had the highest reputation for integrity and ability. He was a good man in the Hawes tradition.
