Philip S. Chovanec, age 84, of St. Louis passed away Saturday, February 28, 2026, at MyMichigan Medical Center in Midland. He was born May 5, 1941, at Smith Memorial Hospital in Alma to Bo and Lucille (Tedhams) Chovanec. Philip moved to the Detroit area in 1950 with his family and was a 1959 graduate of Clarenceville High School in Livonia.

In September of 1966 he married Linda Stevens and they shared 59 years together.

Philip proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1961 to 1964, stationed at the DMZ in Korea.

He completed a five-year apprenticeship through I.B.E.W. Local 58 in Detroit to become an electrician. A few years later he took classes and passed the test for his Master's License.

After moving back to St. Louis in 1972 with his family he worked for Midland Nuclear Plant in Midland and Bovee in Ithaca before accepting a job at Alma College as their Electrical Supervisor. He retired in 2006 and enjoyed day trips around Michigan and spending long weekends at Harbor Lights Inn in Frankfort, Michigan. He played piano and button key accordions and was a member of a local Polka Band for a number of years, "The Sounds of Czechoslovakia." He was inducted into the Michigan State Polka Music Hall of Fame in 1997.

Philip is survived by his wife Linda; his son Steven Chovanec; another son and three grandsons. Also, a brother Dan (Sherrie) Chovanec and their children.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lucille and Bo.

Cremation has taken place with interment services to be held at a later date in Emerson Township Cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Lux-Moody-Wolfel Funeral Home, Alma.
