Philip Elroy Pickard, born February 26, 1943, in the vibrant city of New Orleans, LA, died January 22, 2024, at Ascension St. Francis Hospital in
Evanston, IL. He was a man of intelligence, courage, and kindness, qualities that shone brightly throughout his life.
Philip was the cherished son of the late Harold E. and Dorothy M., née Engman, Pickard. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Elizabeth Eklund.
Philip found his life's love in Debra Prottsman Pickard, with whom he shared a profound and enduring bond as her loving husband of 28 years, a partnership that was a testament to the strength of their love and commitment. Together, they navigated the joys and sorrows of life.
A testament to his commitment to education, Philip was a proud alumnus of St. Dominic Catholic School and Jesuit High School in his hometown. His pursuit of knowledge led him to Louisiana State University New Orleans (LSUNO), where he earned a BS in Mathematics, followed by a BS in Physics from Southeastern Louisiana College. His quest for learning continued at Pepperdine University in Los Angeles, where he obtained a Master of Business Administration degree and further at Marymount University in Arlington, VA, where he completed an MBA as part of the Executive Program with the United States Postal Service.
Philip's professional life was as dynamic as his educational journey. He served with distinction in the United States Army as a Combat Engineer with the Special Forces. His military career extended into the Foreign Service with the USAREUR, where he continued to exemplify the values of dedication and service. As a Green Beret serving in Vietnam, his courage was evident in the way he faced challenges, both on the battlefield and in personal trials. Transitioning to civilian life, Philip made significant contributions in the petrochemical industry before his impactful tenure at the United States Postal Service Headquarters.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Philip was a man of diverse interests.
He had a deep appreciation for music and literature, finding solace and joy in classical compositions, the grandeur of opera, and traditional New Orleans jazz. His love for these was matched by a passion for travel and spending time with friends from the square dance and dog show families. He and Debra enjoyed their RV travels and the many camping trips spent with these many friends. Exploring new places and creating memories on the open road brought him immeasurable happiness and a sense of freedom. At home his heart belonged to his beloved Kerry Blue Terriers, Rhapsody and Paris, who were faithful companions and a source of unconditional love.
Philip was an active member of various associations that reflected his life's experiences and values. He was a Life Member of the Special Forces Association, honoring his military roots, and maintained a strong connection to his fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, where the bonds of brotherhood were forged and cherished.
Philip Elroy Pickard's journey through life was marked by the many roles he embraced with honor – a devoted son, a loving husband, a heartbroken yet resilient father, a valiant soldier, a dedicated professional, and a true friend. Those who knew Philip will remember him as an intelligent man who lived with purpose and passion. He remained a quiet and gentle soul, embodying the true essence of a Southern gentleman. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, let us remember Philip for the indomitable spirit, kindness, and warmth that defined his life.
