Phillip Aubrey Alward, a man of loving spirit, keen intellect, and courageous heart, passed away on March 8, 2024, surrounded by family. A funeral service to honor and celebrate his life will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, 214 S. Main St.,
Perry, MI 48872. Rev. Dr. Tom Rundel. Interment immediately following at Oak Plains Cemetery, Shaftsburg. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at the funeral home from 4-8:00 PM as well as one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
Born on January 27, 1940, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, Phillip's journey through life was marked by an unwavering dedication to his family and a passion for learning. In the quaint town of
Caribou, Maine, Phillip's life was forever changed when he met Clair Meader, a young lady who would become his beloved wife. United in marriage on July 22, 1962, in
Vienna, Maine, Phillip and Clair embarked on a nearly 62-year journey of love and companionship. Their bond was a testament to the power of partnership and mutual respect as they built a life together and moved to Michigan.
Phillip's professional life was characterized by his work as a Linotype Setter at Logan Brothers Printing in Lansing, where he was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his desire to continually expand his knowledge. He was often found with a dictionary in hand, looking up words to deepen his understanding of language and its use, a habit that exemplified his love of
learning.
Athletics played a significant role in Phillip's life, both as a participant and as a coach. He excelled in hockey, soccer, and wrestling, and he channeled his athletic skills into coaching, making a notable impact on the Lansing Association for the Deaf basketball and softball teams. His talents shone on the field and the court, especially when he took the mound as an amazing
pitcher in his youth. Phillip's love for sports was not just about the games but also about the life lessons and camaraderie they fostered.
Phillip's zest for life was also evident in his leisure activities. He had fond memories of camping and fishing with friends, traditions he passed on to his children. Card games were a source of endless entertainment for Phillip and Clair, with Euchre Tournaments, Crazy Eights, and Kings in the Corner providing the backdrop for laughter and playful competition within the Alward household. Another favorite of Phillip was ice cream, something he shared with his children and
grandchildren.
Phillip is survived by his beautiful wife, Clair, and their children, Marty (Ellen) Alward, Victoria (Scott) Fox, and Luke Alward. He was a proud grandfather to Ryan Fox, Grant Fox, Vivien Alward, Abby Alward, Mia Alward, Sophia Alward, and Nella Alward, and his great-grandson, Malachi. His furry canine companion, Daisey, also held a special place in his heart. Phillip was
preceded in death by his parents Ernest F. and Beulah J. (Phillips) Alward and his beloved son, Tony Alward.
Those who knew Phillip will remember a man who was as loving as he was intelligent, and as courageous as he was kind. His ability to inspire, educate, and entertain will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of being part of his life. Phillip's legacy will continue to live on through the stories shared, the lessons taught, and the love he gave so freely.
