Phillip Lee Krahn, known affectionately as Phil, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2024, at the age of 90, in
Brighton, Michigan. Born on May 25, 1933, in
Kenosha, Wisconsin, Phil was a man whose life was marked by dedication, innovation, and a deep-seated kindness that touched all who knew him.
Phil's journey began as a bright young mind in Salem, where he grew up with his loving family. He pursued his passion for engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, where he earned his Bachelor's degree. This education laid the foundation for what would become a remarkable career spanning 39 years with General Motors. As a Test Engineer and Staff Analysis Engineer, Phil's contributions were nothing short of extraordinary. He played a pivotal role in developing auto airbag programs, guidance equipment for aerospace, and the B52 bomber guidance system. His work on terrain avoidance radar was crucial, and he was instrumental in the monumental achievement of putting a man on the moon, developing the telescope that guided astronauts in space and ensured their safe return to Earth.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Phil was a man of faith and service. He was deeply involved in his church's finance operations and served on many different committees, contributing his time and talents to the betterment of his community. Phil also dedicated himself to public service as the Deputy Treasurer for Oceola Township, where his integrity and diligence were greatly valued.
Phil's interests were as diverse as they were unique. He was a proud member of the Circus Fans of America, specifically The Dorothy Herbert Tent, where he shared his love for the grandeur and history of the circus. An avid coin collector, Phil found joy in the stories each piece told and the history they preserved. His love for draft horses was another hallmark of his character; he not only admired these majestic creatures but also sponsored teenagers, teaching them how to handle and care for these gentle giants.
Family was the cornerstone of Phil's life. He is survived by his brother Mark (Linda) Krahn, his nieces Tina and Liza Krahn, Lynn Woppert, and his nephew Paul Martindale. Phil was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joyce (Rymer), and his nephew James Martindale. His family will remember him as a pillar of strength, love, and unwavering support.
Phil was a kind soul, a man whose faith guided him through life's challenges and whose interesting stories could captivate any audience. His legacy is not only in the groundbreaking work he accomplished or the committees he served but also in the simple acts of kindness he extended to everyone he met.
As we bid farewell to Phillip Lee Krahn, we celebrate a life well-lived, a life filled with purpose, passion, and a profound impact on the world. Phil's memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his contributions will resonate for generations to come.
