Phillip Smart Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hidden Valley Funeral Home of Kearney on Jul. 19, 2024.
Phillip Raynor Smart, 82, of Kearney, Missouri passed away peacefully at Liberty Hospital on Thursday, July 18th. Visitation will be held 10am July 27th at Hidden Valley Funeral Home, 925 E State Route 92, Kearney, MO 64060 with funeral services to follow at 11am.
Raynor was born in Centerville, Iowa to Paul Dean and Helen Smart on July 27, 1941. He grew up on a farm in Pollock, MO and attended Milan High School graduating in 1959. He went on to attend Missouri Valley College and Truman State University. He began a career in commercial floor-covering, taking out-several years to return to family farming after his father's death. Growing up on and working the farm would instill within him a powerful work ethic and a hardy spirit he would bring with him to every new venture he found.
He would go on working as a floor layer and business owner for a great many years in the Kansas City Area. There was hardly a floor in the city he didn't lay himself or at least know who did. Always a man for his community, in his spare time Raynor would often woodwork and garden, finding joy in creating a new piece of furniture for a family member or gifting some excellent crops for a neighbor.
He would carry on with his hobbies of woodworking and gardening for a great many years, but perhaps he will be most remembered and missed for his inviting smile, the glint in his eye when someone told him something they were excited about, a thumbs up and a "Well alright!" when someone told him good news. He never knew anyone who wasn't a friend, greeting those he met with a hearty howdy and instantly making them feel welcome.
He is survived by wife Linda, sister Carolyn Judd, brother Russell Smart (Wanda) sons Mark Smart (RJ) and Roy V "Tres" Gray III, daughters Marti Jones and Monique Goodeyon (Dennis), grandsons Kirk Hoerrmann (Char), Stethan Smart (Makayla), Trisden and Zachary Goodeyon, granddaughters Payton, Delaney and Kaelynn Gray, Tyler Jones, and great granddaughter Harper Rayne Smart. In addition, step-grandchildren – Cassie Hanes, Heather Booth, Scott Mullen, John Sorrentino, Branden Sorrentino and their families alongside numerous nieces and nephews.
If you would like to make a contribution, in lieu of flowers please make a donation to the American Heart Association in Raynor's name.
