Phyllis Jean Castle Brown
1939-2025
"Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her." - Proverbs 31:28
Phyllis Jean Castle Brown, age 86, of Flatwoods, KY, went home to be with her Heavenly Father, on October 10, 2025.
Phyllis was born in the summer of 1939, on July 9th, in Tutor Key, KY. She was the blessing and the youngest child of the late Cap L. and Bessie Pickleseimer Castle. She attended Oil Springs High School and continued her education at Mayo State Vocational- Technical School. Phyllis did a lot for her community and was awarded Kentucky Colonel.
Over 60 years ago Phyllis met and later married her husband, John Mack Brown, and began her family. Together they raised two beloved boys and enjoyed several grandchildren. Phyllis made caring for her family her whole life's work. She made sure the boys had a home full of love and a hot meal every day. Later in life her grandchildren filled her days with happiness and cherished memories. Phyllis loved getting lost in the pages of a good book and would spend hours reading. She was a woman of great faith and attended both Catlettsburg First Church of the Nazarene and Wurtland Nazarene. It was there that her relationship with God could flourish and grow.
Phyllis will be remembered for her gentle spirit, unwavering faith, and the deep love she poured into her family. Her legacy lives on in the laughter of her grandchildren, the stories shared around the table, and the faith she passed down through generations.
She is survived by her devoted husband of over 60 years, John Mack Brown; her beloved sons; Jeffrey "Tom" Brown of Ashland, KY, and Christopher Lee Brown and his wife Renea of Greenup, KY and her cherished grandchildren; Holly Renee Brown, Cody Trace Brown, great-grandchildren, Madison Paige Ross, and Brooklyn Shae Ross, who will forever hold her close in their hearts. Also surviving is a special former-daughter-in-law Leanna Ross and her husband John, several nieces, nephews, many extended family members and friends.
In addition to her parents, Phyllis is reunited with all of her siblings who passed before her.
A celebration of life will be held at Wurtland Nazarene on Friday, October 17, 2025. Visitation for friends and family will take place from 4pm to 5:30pm, with a service beginning at 5:30pm with Bobby Castle officiating.
