Phyllis J. Bufkin, 91, of Monticello, passed away on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at I U Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette.She was born on January 2, 1933 in Rensselaer to the late Cecil and Thelma (Sweet) Blount. On April 11, 1953 she married Clay Braden. They later divorced and he preceded her in death. On July 5, 1977, she married Jerald L. Bufkin in Las Vegas. He preceded her in death.
Phyllis was a 1951 graduate of Royal Center High School. Her first job was at a tomato factory in Royal Center and she made 10 cents per bucket. Then, she worked at Rices Corporation in Winamac and made blue jeans. She later worked at Northway in Winamac where she made cabinets. Over the years, she worked several stints as a babysitter. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Medaryville. She loved Bingo and going to the casino. She cherished her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by daughter, Pamela (Doug) Speer of Monticello; son, Gary (Debbie) Braden of Monon; two sisters, Doris (Jack) Hinderlider of Sunnyside, WA, "Sue" Pickett of Monticello; six brothers, Donald (Norma) Blount of Monticello, Richard Blount of Brookston, Kenneth "Butch" Blount of FL, Michael (Christina) Blount of Kokomo; sister-in-law, Mary Blount of Delphi; grandchildren, Lisa (Dusty) Cawby, Karen (Lance) Youngs, Jeremy Wireman, Nathan (Brittany) Braden, Jessica (Matt) Baker; and seven great grandchildren.In addition to her parents and husband Jerald, she was also preceded in death by brothers, Dean, Cecil, Frank, Robert and Steven "Homer" Blount, and sisters, Edna White, Marjorie Williams and Sharon Korrect; grandchildren, Cory Howerton, Douglas Speer.
Visitation will be Monday, September 16th from 11:00 am until the time of services at 1:00 pm celebrating her life at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello with nephew Curt Blount and Rick Faye officiating. Burial will follow in Buffalo Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
