Phyllis Cano Mrs. Phyllis Cano passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at Robert Wod Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. She was 82 years old. She was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey and was a graduate of West Side High School. Soon after she married her sweetheart, Paul Cano.
The young couple resided in East Orange and Verona before moving to North Brunswick in 1969 where they would raise their family and reside until her passing. Mrs. Cano stayed at home to keep the house comfortable for her husband and children for a time. Once the children were in school, she went to work for the New Brunswick Public School System as a head cook. This made perfect sense as she was the kind of person that would make sure you left her home not only full but with food to bring home. She retired from McKinley Elementary School as a head cook after twenty-five years of service to the children of New Brunswick.
She truly did take the most pleasure in gathering with her family and caring for her family. Of course, this also meant feeding them. She was a wonderful cook known for her homemade manicotti, raviolis and pasta's. Among her favorite places to travel were Aruba, Spain, cruising destinations, Las Vegas and Shoprite.
Mrs. Cano was predeceased by her sister Jacqueline Ely.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Paul Cano Jr. and their children Renee Cano and her partner Robert Murphy, Gina Castronouovo and her husband Frank, Paul Cano III and Daniel Cano.
She is also survived by her sisters, Roseann Brame and her husband Roger and Marlene Lepore and her husband Philip and her grandchildren Vincent, Paul IV, Frank, Nicholas, Isabella and Daniel Jr.
Friends and family will gather at Gleason Funeral Home of North Brunswick 555 Georges Road in North Brunswick on Saturday March 8, 2025, from 1-5 PM. All other services will take place privately.

Condolences and love to the entire Cano tribe. Phyllis brought such joy (and delicious food!) to all of our lives, her smile and laugh brightened each and every one of them at every encounter. I'm so glad to have had her in my life, and just down the street for half of it, it just wouldn't have been the same without her. x
