Phyllis M. Haehn, age 85, of Concord Township, Ohio, died July 29, 2024 after an extended illness. Phyllis was one of three children, born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Steve and Louise Plata.
She was a graduate of Chardon High School class of 1957 and Lakeland Community College (RN) nursing program. Phyllis worked as a Registered Nurse for the Cuyahoga County Hospital System's skilled-nursing facility, Sunny Acres, for many years while caring for patients with long-term illness or injuries.
Phyllis was a devoted wife and mother. She also maintained many close friendships and enjoyed one-on-one visits, restaurant meals, and picnic lunches in the park.
Phyllis was an excellent cook and enjoyed discovering new and interesting recipes to the delight of everyone who attended the many holiday and family gatherings she hosted over the years. She experimented with photography and had a lifelong love of reading, often consuming several books per week. Phyllis was also an avid gardener and loved cultivating beautiful flower gardens and landscaping around her home. She had a talent for sewing and made many of her own clothes, curtains and upholstery, and many beautiful quilts. She loved music and enjoyed playing the dulcimer in several groups with friends and would sometimes join other family members to play for mass at church.
She enjoyed horseback riding for many years and her interest evolved into training and competing in numerous equestrian endurance events up to 100 miles in duration. Her lifelong love of animals led to many adopted pets over the years.
Phyllis also enjoyed spending time outdoors hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. She completed several across Ohio Bike tours and cycled in foreign countries on Elderhostel Programs. She enjoyed traveling to experience other people, places, and cultures. She traveled to many places domestically and internationally including England, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, and Holland.
Phyllis has always been a very special, kind, and loyal person to all who knew her. She was loved dearly by all her family and friends and will be forever missed.
Phyllis is survived by her sons, Matthew (Susan), Jeffrey (Debra), Christopher (Melissa), and Aaron (Bonnie); daughter-in-law, Linlin Liu; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Dr. Ralph Haehn; son, Joseph; parents, Steve and Louise Plata, brother, Richard, and sister, Dianne.
Private services will be held. Memorial contributions are suggested to Western Reserve Nature Conservancy, 3850 Chagrin River Road, Moreland Hills, OH 44022 (www.wrlandconservancy.org); or to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44110-9915, (www.hospicewr.org).
