Phyllis Maynes Obituary

Phyllis Maynes
December 22, 1924 ~ October 8, 2025
Phyllis Maynes, 100 years, passed away in Meriden, Connecticut on October 8, 2025.
A Meriden native, Phyllis grew up on Carpenter Avenue in the house that her parents, Edwin Maynes and Janet Scott Maynes, built in the 1920s. Phyllis graduated from Meriden High School in 1942 and, following graduation, at the age of 18, went to work for Squire Travel Co. on East Main Street. A dedicated and loyal employee, Phyllis worked for the Squire family's business for 60 years.
Throughout her life, Phyllis was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Meriden and the Meriden Grange. She was also a skilled player in her bowling league and a keen Scrabble enthusiast, competing against her brother, nieces, and nephew at holiday gatherings. Phyllis enjoyed childhood family trips to Maine and the Connecticut Shore. A New Englander at heart, she often traveled by steam ferry from Woods Hole to meet her brother E. Scott Maynes, her sister-in-law Blanche, and their children, Lisa, Philip and Christina, to join their summer vacations on Nantucket.
To her friends, work colleagues, and family, Phyllis was known as a great lady and a loyal friend. Over the years, she hosted many picnics and celebrations in her backyard with her Carpenter Avenue neighbors, including sisters Rosemary (Walsh) Golden and Evelyn Walsh, Carl Langer, and the Drescher family.
The Maynes family would like to express their deep gratitude to the current and past management of the Bradley Home, Molly Savard, Anne Dembski, and John Miller, and the staff of the Bradley Home for their care and friendship for our Aunt Phyllis. She made the Bradley Home her home for over 20 years and relished the friendships and activities there that brought her great joy.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Yalesville Funeral Home. There are no calling hours.

Phyllis was my Moms (Ruth Fogg) best friend when they worked together at Squire Travel and Insurance back in the 1960's. We also were all members at First Baptist Church on Broad St. Phyllis gave me numerous opportunities to make what she called "pocket money" mowing the Grass and shoveling snow at the Carpenter Ave residence she shared with her parents during my high school years until our family moved to Ohio in 1968. Condolences to the Maynes family, she was a wonderful person.

My sincere sympathy to you on the passing of your loved one, Phyllis Maynes. I only met her a few times years ago but often wondered how she was doing after she moved to the Bradley home. She lived a good long life both on Carpenter Ave and later at the home. Growing up she was a friend and neighbor of my mother, Marie Prillwitz Hintz, daughter of Fred and Regina Prillwilltz who lived at 31 Carpenter Ave in Meriden. So, of course, when we went to visit my grandparents we would see Phyllis, and her parents Edwin and Janet and hear stories of their adventures and travels, of Scotty and his family, etc, etc. . She was a happy person, always welcoming us into the home and ready for a chat. I occasionally drive-up Carpenter Ave when I am in Meriden putting flowers on the graves of my parents/grandparents to see the old neighborhood. Sweet memories of our loved ones and the years past. Again, my sympathy to you all./Diane Hintz
