Phyllis May Powell

Phyllis May Powell was born in Columbus, Ohio on July 13, 1929 and graduated from West High School in 1947. She married Jack Powell on November 13, 1949 and soon afterwards, they moved to Mansfield, Ohio. She and Jack had two daughters, Pamela and Ernelee. Phyllis was proud of her work as a church secretary at Main Street United Methodist Church, a township clerk for Washington Township, and as a Red Cross volunteer.
She loved to travel with her family, visiting many states throughout the US. In 1974, her first airplane trip was a visit with daughter Ernelee and husband Jeff, who were stationed with the US Army in Bamburg, Germany. After Jack's retirement in 1985, they moved to sunny Florida for several years, returning to Columbus to spend more time with their three grandchildren.
Phyllis loved to play the piano/organ and was known to dance as well. She and Jack made many friends over the years and were always fun to be around. Her family was often told, "We just love your Mom. She is such a sweet, funny and caring woman."
Her grandchildren have fond memories of sleep-overs, learning to play cards, having her watch over them after school, and singing along to Willy Nelson while riding in her car. They remember Phyllis as a wonderful caregiver for Jack as he struggled with Alzheimer's in the last years of his life.
Phyllis passed away on July 27th, 2022. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jack who passed in February 2018. She is survived by her daughters Pamela (Mike) and Ernelee (Jeff), her grandchildren Katie (Jordan), Kyle (Maggie) and Colin, and her great-granddaughter Avery.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 29, 2022, at the Rutherford Funeral Home in Powell, Ohio. Phyllis will be laid to rest with her husband Jack in a private interment at the Dayton National Cemetery on August 4, 2022.
