Phyllis Harrell Scott, 71, of Montclair, NJ, passed away on July 15, 2025. She was the eldest daughter of Vernon and Mary Harrell.
A lifelong resident of Montclair, Phyllis accepted Christ at an early age and graduated proudly with the Montclair High School Class of 1971.She continued her education at Evangel College in Springfield, Missouri.
Phyllis was a gifted musician and devoted student of the late Dr. Byerte Johnson, under whose mentorship she flourished. She often accompanied Dr. Johnson and assisted in teaching at Bloomfield College. A consummate musician, Phyllis shared her talent generously throughout the community. She played for Sharon Miller's summer program and sang with the Jubilation Choir. She faithfully lent her musical gifts to many churches in Montclair, including St. Mark's United Methodist Church, St. Paul Baptist Church and Trinity Presbyterian as the youth choir Director.
Phyllis married Harold Scott, and from their union came her beloved son, Robert-her heartbeat, pride and joy. She served for 30 years as the in-house musician and vocalist for Martin's Home for Service, all while working full-time for the United States Postal Service.
Her life was a testimony to dedication and purpose. Phyllis inspired, mentored, and nurtured the love of music in countless young people, leaving a legacy that will resonate for generations.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her father Vernon Harrell, her husband Harold Scott, and her cherished son Robert "Rob" Scott. She leaves to cherish her memory: her loving mother Mary Harrell; sister Vivian Harrell; Uncle Edward Harrell; godchildren Shawn Smith and Andrea Hurt; along with a host of cousins, relatives, and dear friends.
Phyllis will be deeply missed-a beacon in the sky and the angel of music

Missing you

This is a very hard pill to swallow but I know to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. My dear friend I will never be able to say goodbye. I am going to miss our 8am conversations and our text messages throughout the day encouraging each other to stay in the fight. I THANK YOU for always being there to snap me back to reality before I exploded on someone (lol). I THANK YOU for helping me become the RN I am today you pushed me and right when I wanted to give up you drove to my house and made me take my books out and study...we even studied together while we were sorting mail at the post office (lol). I THANK YOU for always being there for Makayla and now that you gained your wings I know you will continue to watch over us. You are in a better place with no worries, no pain and finally able to be with your son Rob. I will cherish our memories, our talks, and even our arguments (lol) I am going to miss you SOOOO much my dear friend but I know you are right beside me smiling. Until we see each other again I will continue to look to the sky, close my eyes and listen to the sweet sound of your singing voice saying WELL DONE MY FRIEND WELL DONE ......Love Kerah& Makayla

I salute my cousin Phyllis with a job well done. A woman of statue in our community. A heart of gold, and will be truly missed by everyone she touched. I love my sister in Christ Jesus.
