On June 15, 2023, Ping-Fu Tsao, 96 years young, of Sandy, UT, passed away peacefully at home with his beloved wife and children at his side.
Ping-Fu appreciates the simple things in life. He enjoys cooking, gardening, hiking, spending time with nature and the company of friends and family. He is strong, independent, lived a life full of adventure and is well-traveled.
Born in 1927 to an aristocratic family in Tianjin, China. Ping-Fu was the third son of five children. He fled to Taiwan with Chiang Kai-shek where he re-established himself as a successful businessman and married the love of his life, Shu-Mei, who was an announcer at a radio broadcasting station where they both worked.
Ping-Fu is a family man, devoted to providing for his wife and three children. In 1976 with the sponsorship of his sister-in-law, Shu-Yang Jenn, Ping-Fu left his comfortable career in Taiwan and immigrated with his wife and three children to Salt Lake City, Utah in pursuit of better education and opportunities for his children. This was a bold move since no one in the family spoke English at the time. With hard work, dedication, lots of English classes, and most importantly, Shu-Mei on his side, Ping-Fu successfully rebuilt their life in the U.S. and became a successful entrepreneur, owning Golden Gate Restaurant in Sandy, Utah for 22 years until retirement. This was the first Chinese restaurant in Utah to serve traditional Chinese food and was featured in PM Magazine Utah, a popular television show at the time.
After becoming a U.S. citizen, Ping-Fu had the fortune of returning to China to reunite with his brothers and sister and to preserve the family legacy by publishing books regarding the Tsao genealogy and history.
Ping-Fu is predeceased by his parents and four siblings.
He is survived by his wife, son, two daughters, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, two grandsons and two granddaughters.
Ping-Fu lived a full life and touched many hearts. He will be missed dearly. A memorial service will be held at Memorial Murray Mortuary, 5850 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 11:00 am. The family is requesting your presence in lieu of flowers or gifts. Thank you.
