Quentin "Skip" August Malmquist, age 93, of Elizabeth City, NC, died at Harmony at Oakbrooke in Chesapeake, VA, on Monday, September 22, 2025. He was born in Cabot, VT, on July 16, 1932, to the late Walter August Malmquist and Olive Smith Malmquist. Skip was the husband of Cynthia Ward Malmquist. He was a 1950 graduate of Spaulding High School in Barre, VT and attended North Carolina State University, graduating in 1954, with a B.S. in Wood Technology and a B. S. in Engineering. He was a member of the ROTC while at North Carolina State and performed two years of honorable service in the U. S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant.

Skip was a business owner, consultant, wood products industry plant and general manager at multiple firms: Vermont Bureau of Industrial Research (Norwich University, Northfield, VT) Consultant and Director; Vermont Weather Board (Wolcott, VT) Plant Manager; Bradford Veneer & Panel Co., (Bradford, VT) Plant and General Manager; and Malmquist Wood Products, Inc. (Post Mills, VT) Owner, Plant Manager, Head Sawyer and Chief of Forestry Operations.

Skip was also very involved in community activities and leadership, serving as Thetford, VT Elementary School Board Member and Treasurer; Town Meeting Moderator in Thetford, VT; a Deacon of the Post Mills, VT Congregational Church; and Council Member and Chair of Ford K. Sayre Memorial Ski Program, which provides Alpine and Nordic skiing instruction and activities to pre-high school students. He also coached the Thetford Little League Baseball Team for more than a decade as well as provided the fields for the teams to play upon. As a teenager he enjoyed repairing and flying small airplanes. Later in life he enjoyed golf, tennis, dancing, hunting deer and partridge, and maintaining the home he built in Vermont.

In addition to his wife, Cynthia, he is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Olive Bryson, and husband, Captain James E. Bryson; two sons, Walter August Malmquist, II and wife, Nancy S. Malmquist, of Bradford, VT, and Cliff Ward Malmquist and wife, Kelly Faunce Malmquist, of South Portland, ME; and his grandchildren, Erin Wenrick, Tenley Malmquist, and Kaylin Malmquist. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Patricia Malmquist Doyle, Greta Malmquist Gregory, and Myriam A. Malmquist; a brother, Kermit Edwin Malmquist; and a grandchild, Alex Wenrick.

A private service and burial will be held in Elizabeth City, NC.
