Rachel Ophelia Barrs Walker, aged 90, gently passed from this world on December 26, 2025, in the hometown she cherished
Perry, FL. Born on January 4, 1935, to Thomas and Ada Cannon, Rachel was a beloved figure in her community, known for her unwavering love and devotion to family, faith, and the joys of life.
Rachel's journey as a homemaker and professional babysitter enriched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those she cared for. For 43 years, she shared her life with Sammy Barrs, nurturing a family that would continue to thrive with love and togetherness. In 2019, Rachel found new joy in her marriage to Lester Walker, creating six beautiful years filled with laughter and companionship.
Known for her delightful cooking, especially her cherished cornbread, Rachel brought warmth and comfort to every gathering. Her heart was as expansive as her love for the outdoors, fishing and camping excursions became treasured memories shared with family. A devoted member of Friendship Baptist Church, Rachel's faith was the beacon guiding her through life, providing strength and purpose.
Rachel leaves behind a loving legacy that is carried on by her son, Sammy Barrs Jr (Trish), her daughter, Karen Tharpe (Ricky), her daughter in law Marilyn Johnson and stepson JR. Walker. Her brother Earl Cannon, her sister Doris "Bobo" Moffat. Her grandchildren Maria Tharpe Giddens, Monica Whiddon (Ed), RJ Tharpe (Cassie), Kyle Johnson (Kasey), Kaycie Stringer (Lee),Keyla Nance (Dalton), Chance Barrs (Missy), Leigh Walker, Jesika Curry (Brad), Stephanie White (Anthony). her 29 great grand-children and 4 great great grand-children. Each of them holds a piece of her spirit, embodying the kindness and dedication she shared with the world.
She is predeceased by her parents Thomas and Ada Cannon, her brothers Rev. RC Cannon, Johnny Cannon, Pharo Cannon, Rev, James Cannon and Lonnie Cannon. Her sisters Ellen Simpson, Eunice Blue, Ethel Mae Brown and Audrey Kelley. Her first husband Sammy. Her son Tommy Johnson and stepson Wayne Walker.
In celebration of her life, a public visitation will be held on December 28, 2025, at 2:00-4:00 PM at Joe P. Burns Funeral Home in Perry. Family and friends are invited to join together for funeral services at Joe P. Burns Funeral Home on December 29, 2025, at 11:00 AM with Interment at Pine View Cemetery where we will honor Rachel's remarkable journey, reflect on the moments shared, and rejoice in the love that continues to bind us.
As we say our final goodbyes, let us remember Rachel not with sadness, but with grateful hearts, cherishing the light she brought into our lives and the love that will forever endure. Her spirit will continue to bless us, guiding us as she always has.
