Raden R. Eagle Chasing, 26, of Cherry Creek, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at Cheyenne River Health Center, Eagle Butte.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 7, 2024, at the Blue Gym, Cherry Creek. Burial will follow in St. Andrew's Episcopal Cemetery. A wake service will be 6:00 p.m., Sunday, October 6, 2024, at the Blue Gym with a procession from the hill east of town at 4:00 p.m.
Raden Royce Eagle Chasing, Ta yá Máni, was born on September 13, 1998, to DeeAnn Eagle Chasing and Orlando Morrison. He was born on the way to Pierre, SD in the back of an ambulance. His mom was at a co-ed softball tournament and at 9 months pregnant was still trying to play. He was born breech, and you could say Raden was literally born legs first, running into the world of sports.
He grew up in Cherry Creek, SD and was very attached to his Mama. Everywhere she went, he followed. When Raden was a little boy, one of his favorite things was playing with his plastic dinosaurs and pretending to be a dinosaur. He would imitate how they walked, their movements and all the sounds they made. He loved them so much that he could convince everyone around him to pretend to be dinosaurs too. There were even times when he got his Grandma Iris and uncles Orrie Dupris and Karsten Buffalo to pretend to be dinosaurs too, they even made the noises. Now we can just see him with his two uncles in Heaven and probably still convincing them to make those dinosaur sounds! Raden loved helping his Lala Maynard at the ranch and it was Lala who would give him his first nickname, Joe Bucking Horse "Joe Buck". He also liked to go fishing with his mom, DeeAnn, and Grandpa Billy Dupris.
Raden attended Cherry Creek Head Start and K-12 at Dupree School. He finished his senior year and graduated as a Takini Skyhawk. Sports was in his blood, both of his parents played softball, and you could always count on seeing him at the ballfield. He would travel with his dad, Orlando, and brother, Randen, to basketball and softball tournaments throughout the state and beyond. He made so many great memories with his family and even got to visit Disneyland with them.
He didn't play basketball his freshman year of high school, but he made up for lost time in his final three years of high school. During his senior year, while playing for the Dupree Tigers against the Takini Skyhawks, Raden made his 1,000th career point. When he reached the 1000th point, the game was halted, and he was presented with two star quilts to honor him and his achievement. Raden decided to finish his high school basketball career at Takini High School as a Skyhawk, like both of his parents before him. While at Takini High School, he was chosen to play as a member of the 12th Annual Great Plains Senior All-Star game in White River, SD. He was the first player from Takini School to participate in the game in the 12 years the Senior All-Star game had been in existence, and he was chosen as a Lakota All-Star.
After high school, Raden continued to make his home in Cherry Creek, SD and became a father to three children, Bryler Blue Coat (stepdaughter), Rhya-Rae Paulina Eagle Chasing (daughter), and Rydon-Rhys Edward Eagle Chasing (son). He loved all three of his children, he loved spending time with them, and he did everything he could to make their lives happy and secure.
Raden was much loved by his daughters, son, parents, brother, sister, aunties, uncles, uncis, and lalas. He will be missed more than we can say. In 2017 he wrote a personal statement for the Next College Student Athlete (NCSA) organization. The last sentence of his statement is a perfect summary of how Raden lived his life, always putting the safety and well-being of others before himself, "I love to pass the ball to all my teammates but if someone has the hot hand, I will pass it to them more often I would rather put my teammates before me."
Raden is survived by his three children: daughters, Bryler Blue Coat and Rhya-Rae Paulina Eagle Chasing, and son, Rydon-Rhys Edward Eagle Chasing; mother, DeeAnn Eagle Chasing; father, Orlando Morrison; siblings: Randen Eagle Chasing and Bessie Eagle Chasing; nephew, Landen Clown; nieces: Kamryn Clown, Evelyn, He'Haka, and Ota Win Red Tomahawk, and Cymbeline Reddog; grandmothers: Iris Eagle Chasing, Kathleen Eagle Chasing, Ophelia Dupris, Nadine Widow, and Barbara Morrison; grandfathers: Marlon Yellow Owl, Edmund Widow, Edwin Widow, and Audie Morrison; and great-grandfather, Russel Benoist.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers: Maynard Dupris, Billy Dupris, Gary Jr., Orville, Royce, Justin, and Scott Marrowbone; grandmothers: DeeAnn Demery, Delema Eagle Chasing, and Erma Marrowbone; great grandfathers: Roland Roach, James Morrison, and Edward Widow; great grandmothers: Pauline Eagle Chasing, Linda Marrowbone, and Amelia Morrison; and great-great grandmother, Bessie Yellow Owl.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Raden's arrangements.
