Rainer "Ray" Weigel

Rainer "Ray" Weigel, age 91, of Glen Ellyn, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, in Winfield, Illinois. Born on November 22, 1933, in Thalheim, Germany he lived a life marked by dedication to his profession, service to his community, and a deep love for his family.

Ray pursued higher education with distinction, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Lake Forest College before continuing on to the University of Michigan Law School. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a long and respected legal career. He was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1958, later gaining admission to the Florida Bar in 1976 and the District of Columbia Bar in 1989.

Professionally, Ray made a lasting impact as a senior partner at McDermott, Will & Emery in Chicago, Illinois. He also accepted the challenge of managing the Miami Office from 1984-1987. His tenure there reflected not only his legal acumen but also his commitment to excellence and integrity. He retired from the firm in 1994 after decades of dedicated service.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ray was deeply involved in philanthropic and community work. He served as a board member and officer for several organizations including The Ray Graham Foundation, the Foundation for the Handicapped, and Central DuPage Hospital. His leadership and compassion helped shape programs that supported individuals with disabilities and improved healthcare access within his community.

Ray is survived by his beloved wife, Catherine (Holmes) Weigel; four children: Gary (Linda) Weigel, Susan Scott, Holly (Jason) Fels, and Amy (Chris) Olcott; ten grandchildren: Ryan (Sara) Scott, Kevin (Dominique) Scott, Timothy (Nico Norena) Scott, Megan (Cody) Kliethermes, Braden Fels, Jack Fels, Kaitlyn Fels, Amanda Olcott, Ashley Olcott, and Chase Olcott; and two great-grandchildren: Eddie and Lola Scott.

He is also remembered by two stepchildren: H. Brennon (Carolyn) Holmes and Michael (Kathleen) Holmes; eight step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his stepdaughter Mary C. Follmer.

Ray found joy in many pursuits outside of work. A passionate Green Bay Packers fan throughout his life, he rarely missed a game. He also enjoyed golfing and gardening-pastimes that brought him peace and satisfaction over the years.

Above all else, Ray was a devoted husband who cherished time with his family. His unwavering positivity left an indelible mark on those around him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Girls and Boys Clubs of the Union League Club of Chicago; Lake Forest College; or the University of Michigan Law School for student aid-causes close to Ray's heart.
