Bernard Powers Obituary

Bernard Martin Powers passed away peacefully at his home in Aurora, Colorado on September 10, 2025. Bernie was born in Chicago in 1946. He served proudly as a U.S. Army Sergeant in the Vietnam War, earned his Bachelor’s degree at Northern Illinois University, and then obtained his MBA at Lake Forest College. Bernie then had a long successful career in the gaming industry.

While in college, Bernie met his wife of 52 years: Judith (Gustafson) Powers. They had four incredible daughters: Kelley Strandberg, Kerry Sirkka, Courtney Mattes, and Katy Powers. Bernie also cherished his four sons (in law): John Strandberg, Juha Sirkka, Michael Mattes, and Dave Lieberman. Finally, he treasured eight grandchildren: Taylor, Hayley, Matthew, Samantha, Mikko, Milla, Christopher, and Zachary. For Bernie, family was his life, they are the legacy of love he left and his proudest accomplishment.

Bernie also left behind his beloved dog Milly. He took Milly to the dog park every day, occasionally picking up one of her dog cousins to join. Bernie always carried treats in his pocket and doted after each dog he met.

His grandchildren referred to Bernie as “Papa Disney” given his passion for all things Disney. He trekked out to Disney World multiple times a year, first with his children and later with his grandchildren, to enjoy his favorite place on earth with his favorite people. Bernie’s family will honor his tradition and will have a private celebration of his life at Disney World next month.

Bernie’s family will also host a celebration of his life on November 26, 2025 in Aurora, Colorado, details to follow. All of our Friends and family are welcome to stay for Thanksgiving festivities on the following day. Bernie loved these large family events, knowing we are together and celebrating the life he lived will bring our family great happiness.

His family will continue to celebrate his life and legacy and encourage you to do the same by spending time with your family or making a donation in his name to: Lifeline Puppy at Lifeline Puppy Donate.
